mcluck commented on How to talk to anyone and why you should   theguardian.com/lifeandst... · Posted by u/Looky1173

I don't know. The idea is old and looks solid but the more I think about it the more I don't buy it; people have less good friends. Many people are estranged from family. Many people barely say hello to their neighbors. Maybe we should expend our limited energy on the people we do know instead of strangers waiting for the bus. For me starting something with a complete stranger is draining; I need to overcome a psychological barrier (that's probably there for a good reason); so the risk is there. The reward ? I'm not sure. Some interactions could be fun, many could be boring and draining. Sure I could get better at this skill of talking to strangers with lots of struggle but the end game isn't really clear, it's not gonna flip my personality into a charismatic stranger lover. I could use the time to quietly stare at space or call my mom instead.

I think you're missing the part where interacting with strangers is also working the general socialization muscle. If you find yourself being more social in general, and give yourself the time to recharge, then you'll be better equipped to engage with those closest to you. You may even get lucky and add someone else to that circle

What issues did you have / still have?

When I started using Matrix, Riot.im did not get notifications in time, or was a battery hog. And Synapse took up a lot of memory, with occasional slowdowns. But then, circa 2022, Synapse improved and Element seems to have worked well and was consistent and reliable on all platforms.

That's exactly the sorts of issues I was having. That and it somehow kept losing my encryption information so I'd lose access to all of my messages or something similarly ridiculous

Very cool article. To really drill it home, I would have loved to see how the query plan changes. It _looks_ like it should Just Work(tm) but my brain refuses to believe that it's able to use those new indexes so flawlessly

I've tried off and on to actually use Matrix. I was a bit of a loud supporter in the early days. Unfortunately, it looks like it still hasn't grown past the fundamental issues I was having then. It might be time to try something else

That's cool, but not all art is good. A lot of it sucks, regardless of the technical acumen involved in its production. This is one of those cases.

This is exactly the kind of negativity that only appears on the internet and that this study sort of shined a light on. Would you really tell this person to their face that their art sucks just because it isn't good for you?

Gemini the protocol is still a bit mysterious to me. Why not use plain HTTPS and just serve a new text/x.gemini MIME type? Or even serve plain old text/html and enforce no-JS-or-CSS in the Gemini client.
mcluck · 8 months ago
Part of the goals of making it so tiny, as far as I understand it, is that a normal person could reasonably implement the entire thing from server to client. Going full HTTPS and HTML is a bit of a lift for a single person in a short period of time

It's clever, but honestly I don't care how smooth it is. Scrolling should simply scroll a view up or down a page. Not invoke animation. We already have established UX patterns for playing media, slowing it down, speeding it up, randomly seeking through it.

I am not familiar with with the rules for piercers and I am certain they are different in different countries but what from of anaesthetics are they legally allowed to administer and at what strength?

Or do you just bite down on a bullet?

mcluck · a year ago
At least in the US, you just bite down. At best they can apply some over-the-counter lidocaine

mcluck commented on Ask HN: Should you reply STOP to unwanted texts?    · Posted by u/yawn
jbaber · a year ago
Wait. Really? I had no idea this is true. You're saying there's a US law that means replying STOP is intercepted by verizon/T-mobile/etc. and the sender never has to see it?
mcluck · a year ago
While it's true that they must comply with the STOP message, I'm not finding any proof that it must be intercepted before reaching the business.
