trogdor commented on The realities of being a pop star   itscharlibb.substack.com/... · Posted by u/lovestory

It's interesting to observe that fame (and the money that usually comes with it) seems to follow something like a log scale. People usually don't become gradually more famous in a linear way. They're more likely to spend a few years with 50k listeners and then get a big hit and get 1 million listeners overnight, then the next big jump is 20 million, and so on.

It's possible to be semi-famous and still able to go to the grocery store and pump your own gas without getting recognized. The local sports radio guys don't need an entourage, even if they do get recognized. But as a rising artist, you hit a point where you can no longer go out in public at all. It's really shocking when it happens because it's so abrupt. My dad's famous friend was a regular at a local restaurant and wasn't bothered for a long time, even when his name/face started showing up in the media. Then one day another customer shouted his name and he got mobbed by fans, and he realized he couldn't go out to eat like a normal person anymore. I think Charli crossed that line with the success of her album Brat last year. It's the point where you start to ask yourself if it's really worth it, and maybe consider going full recluse like Thomas Pynchon. (That's not even getting into the online stan culture stuff that Charli talks about in the article.)

> I think Charli crossed that line with the success of her album Brat last year.

In Hollywood, that line gets crossed at a surprisingly low level. I am friends with Josh Sussman, who played Jacob Ben Israel on Glee. I occasionally visit him in LA, and we can’t go anywhere in public without getting constantly stopped by people wanting photos. It’s exhausting.

>"Zvi and the Cato institute both have lengthy pieces about why the Jones act is bad [1] [2], and whether or not you believe that has entrenched our shipbuilders, the US essentially manufactures no ships compared to South Korea and China."

One issue is that Naval ships are very different from commercial vessels, and at least in the USA, almost no shipyards have shared facilities and staff between the two products since WWII. Interestingly, most other countries do not build most of their naval tonnage (destroyers and frigates) to the same standards that the USA does (European countries are notable for using commercial hulls standards for these ships).

On a related note, the Odd Lots podcast had a (relatively) recent Jones Act debate episode, which is worth a listen if you're interested in the subject.

> European countries are notable for using commercial hulls standards for these ships

Is that a problem? Why would navy ships need a different hull construction?

Did you start a new chat? It doesn't apply to existing chats (probably because it works through the system prompt). I have been using the Robot (Efficient) setting for a while and never had a response like that.

Followup: there is a very noticeable change in my written conversations with ChatGPT. It seems that there is no change in voice mode.

TFA mentions that they added personality presets earlier this year, and just added a few more in this update:

> Earlier this year, we added preset options to tailor the tone of how ChatGPT responds. Today, we’re refining those options to better reflect the most common ways people use ChatGPT. Default, Friendly (formerly Listener), and Efficient (formerly Robot) remain (with updates), and we’re adding Professional, Candid, and Quirky. [...] The original Cynical (formerly Cynic) and Nerdy (formerly Nerd) options we introduced earlier this year will remain available unchanged under the same dropdown in personalization settings.

as well as:

> Additionally, the updated GPT‑5.1 models are also better at adhering to custom instructions, giving you even more precise control over tone and behavior.

So perhaps it'd be worth giving that a shot?

I just changed my ChatGPT personality setting to “Efficient.” It still starts every response with “Yeah, definitely! Let’s talk about that!” — or something similarly inefficient.

So annoying.

We would need to define "famous", because just because someone has a steady cam doesn't mean they're famous :P I would think the amount of "famous" "influencers" making that much is a much higher percentage.

Outside of that Twitch leak some years ago, is there any reliable data on how much content creators make?

I used to be a full-time YouTuber, and I was very successful. For my channels, the revenue estimates on Socialblade were accurate. Reality for me tended toward their high estimate.

I think easier said than done. I was similarly labelled as "gifted" as a child and have struggled my entire life with being ok with where I was, in academics, career even romantic relationships.

Looking at what I've accomplished and obtained, they're objectively better than average along pretty much every dimension. But, I still struggle to be satisfied. I know this is a me issue, but I also don't know how to change it.

2400 hp sounds like a lot, but a Model X Plaid is 1020 hp. I assume it couldn't output 1020 hp for as long though.
trogdor · a month ago
The Plaid can only output its maximum power at 100% state-of-charge (or close to it).

As state-of-charge decreases, so does the overall battery pack voltage. Since the motors can only pull some peak number of amps, doing so at lower pack voltage will always deliver less total power.

I own a Model S Plaid and I used to pay close attention to the OBD-II data, out of curiosity.

trogdor commented on Show HN: Dlog – Journaling and AI coach that learns what drives wellbeing (Mac)   dlog.pro/... · Posted by u/dr-j

Thanks so much for the feedback! Below are my responses.

- Is it a project management tool? If so, how do I share everything with my team? Project management tools are defined by their collaboration and workflow features.

Dlog is not meant to be shared with a team; I will look at enterprise versions later on; but for now, a Blog is public, a Dlog is private. So, the project management definition here has been relaxed to mean a journal with a reminder list(or lists) organised by goals; the timeline view allows you to track these.

- Is it a journaling tool? If so I absolutely don't want my team in the tool, and so can't use it for project management. How does it encourage me to do better journaling and build the habit?

It absolutely is a journaling tool, and so your team can never view these; I am working on a feature for you to tag whether a journal is for work; this will impact the coach responses; and could be used later on for the enterprise version (targeting this for next year at some point). In terms of encouraging you to do better journaling, when you start a New Dlog there at the top left is a toggle called “Journal Coach”, there you can get prompts on the 4-rings (i.e. the Dlog Model at the heart of the app that trains your Dlog Coach is based around the 4 main constructs, Personality, Character, Resources and Well-Being); or ask it for feedback on whatever you are journaling about.

- Is it a wellbeing tool? How well does that work if I don't put my project management in there? If I can't use it for half the stuff it's intended that I will, then it might be of limited use.

Dlog is based on the 4 constructs of Personality, Character, Resources and Well-Being. The Coach will give advice from day 1 after you have taken the baseline survey. It doesn’t matter if you do not use the project tool and just use it for journaling. Projects work in tandem with goals as well. I am keen to hear what features you’d like in the project management side or any other area you would like to see improvements in. I do recommend that you watch the youtube video (if you haven’t already) I made for Show HN in the original post. That should (I hope) explain how this works, but it is unvarnished and 15 minutes long, so I need to get a clearer explainer about the main story here.

- Is it a coaching tool? Why would I want to use an AI coach over a mentor or human coach?

The AI coach is deeply informed by the in-built SEM model; the model I developed during my PhD; based on sentiment analysis scoring of your journals (including projects, but again, it’s not required). There are many buttons available in the coach, check out the video for an example of the output, for example, it can say how to “Strengthen Relationships” (that’s the example given in the video), by looking at which important people in your life over time have impacted your well-being positively or negatively over time, and provide a quantitative and qualitative analysis of this; giving advice in terms of how to improve these relationships and protect your mood and affect. Any responses you ask it the Coach will always try to improve your resources and well-being, focusing on the 4 rings and the Dlog model.

- Is the AI required? I have no idea how many tokens I'd need to use something like this? Do I need a million a day or a million a year? (When coding I tend to use ~10-50m input tokens per session, will this cost $500 per day to use?)

Unless you’ve written over 10 million words its highly unlikely that you’ll use a million tokens in one day. 1 million tokens costs 5.99. But if you dm me your email address that you’ve used to sign up with Dlog I’ll give you 1 million and a free perpetual license so you can use Dlog for free forever (excluding the tokens). I’m doing this for all Show HN readers who write me directly.

- If the AI features are optional, what is the product without it? Without the AI, Dlog is still a useful journaling and projects too. You can actually use another website I made called dlog.site that has no AI features, meant for PC users to use; I'm not really promoting that at the moment as I'm trying to get feedback on the primary Mac OS.

- Overall my feedback is that there's a lot here, and I think the product needs a much clearer story. The copy on the site is long and rambling and needs a lot of tightening up. Personality is good, but in moderation.

Agreed. Working on it!

Again, many thanks for the very useful feedback.

Dr J.

I suggest you practice writing more concisely.

The comment you replied to said that “…there's a lot here, and I think the product needs a much clearer story. The copy on the site is long and rambling and needs a lot of tightening up.”

In response, you wrote more text than I am willing to read — even though I was interested in your answer.

You can't cite Jung and be expected to be taken seriously in 2025. Type "Animus and Anima" in Google and see how crackpot this all sounds and looks.

Republicans are stuck with their backwards views, and they shut their mind completely to concepts like "patriarchy", which elicits violent, automatic reactions from them. I am yet to see a single guy from the right correctly define what "patriarchy" means to the left, and understand that the leftist projects by no means intends to harm men as a group.

To the contrary, liberating men from having to conform to a specific ideal is extremely freeing. So is not being berated for their height, lack of big muscles or whatever it is one "lacks" compared to the model man.

What does patriarchy mean to the left?

Speaking strictly for myself, it's because I did eye contact wrong.

As a teenager, with standard-issue high-function ASD eye-contact aversion: fake it, by looking only at the bridges of people's noses.

After learning, from doing theatre, that vulnerability is amazing, actually, and eye-contact is powerful: try for it, by looking fixidly at one of their eyes.

After being told by a kind friend, in my early twenties, that I had a "staring problem": shift focus between both of their eyes.

Soon after: figure out that you're supposed to look away from their eyes sometimes.

Since: try to pick up and match their gaze-rhythm. I still have difficulty doing this with some people: there are folks who don't seem to have a rhythm. I don't get them!

My wife told me a few weeks ago that when we first got together (over a decade ago) that the times I forgot to mask - during sex, specifically - sufficiently weirded her out that it's why she broke up with me (for about twenty minutes, lol; she reconsidered on her own). Now, bless her, she says she likes it when I "stare", because she says she knows it means I'm comfortable with her and feeling relaxed.

I've got other peculiarities - and some I haven't noticed yet, I'm sure! - but that's a big one, and how I've dealt with it. I hope that helps someone.
