I had a fascination with 100% cotton clothing about ten years ago. These days I don’t. I’m working out a lot more and I care more about quick-drying and moisture-wicking fabrics. I suppose I’m a victim of the athleisure trend where athletic wear becomes everyday wear.
symfoniq · 2 months ago
I sweat a lot and as a result try to avoid cotton for the most part. Wool is just a far better material in my experience, and doesn’t hold odor like cotton.

Oracle is the one to look out for if/when the bubble bursts. Most of the big tech will be fine, albeit hurting for a while. For Oracle, this might be existential.

So you’re saying there’s an upside?
symfoniq commented on The trust collapse: Infinite AI content is awful   arnon.dk/the-trust-collap... · Posted by u/arnon

It is becoming unbearable. YouTube now has "AI" slop ads for Freenow (Lyft brand in the EU) with fake cars that move without the wheels turning and "AI" "actors" that look like plastic.

This of course means that Freenow is now on the personal blacklist. People should not engage with companies who advertise with "AI" slop.

symfoniq · 4 months ago
Agreed. I’m increasingly using the presence of AI slop as a primary signal about whether to avoid a company and its products.

My understanding was you cannot fly without filing a flight plan (or is this just a Canada-specific thing?), and that flight plan has to be submitted by someone, so there has to be a trail here. If the plans were not filed, after all, how would he be able to tell the plane was flown "multiple times" during one of this extended absences?

EDIT: Yes it's Canada-specific, required for any flights over 25 nautical miles, including VFR https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/sor-96-433/p...

VFR (visual) flights don’t require filing a flight plan.

It's funny since Anthropic asked their job candidates not to use AI [0]. I know it's not the same as actually working at Anthropic already, but I just thought it was funny.

Anthropic are trailblazers and this will be everywhere soon. It happened to me tonight with a different company. "We use AI to do our actual work, but please don't use AI for this coding challenge."

Funny, I have the exact opposite experience! I use Claude to fix Gemini’s mess.

Maybe LLMs just make messes.
symfoniq commented on Making video games (without an engine) in 2025   noelberry.ca/posts/making... · Posted by u/selvan

This is basically what I did a couple years ago [1]. SDL2 and a bit of C++ to create a "sprite" class. Some collision code in the sprite class...

If you want to call what I added an "engine" it was more like a pedal-assist bike.

Too often I find "engines" end up driving the project/game. That is, you end up writing the game to the engine. It's why I've avoided Unity, etc. — high-level engines like that seem to guide you to writing the same game everyone else is writing — just with different assets.

Never mind you spend too much time, in my opinion, learning the engine and not getting the game written. To be sure there was a learning curve just pulling in SDL, but the curve was slight and it seemed more universally useful to know SDL as it can be employed in other cross-platform projects I might undertake — not just games.

Just wanted to say that I remember playing your game as a kid on the family Mac IIci. Thanks for the fun memories, and best wishes.
symfoniq commented on Flying somewhere? You may finally need that Real ID   nytimes.com/2025/04/09/tr... · Posted by u/bookofjoe

A passport card is valid for all domestic flights, as well as land travel to Canada and Mexico. I prefer it to my passport book when appropriate as it's sturdier and easier to carry.

It's also nice on international trips as proof of U.S. citizenship (though you'll usually need your book at border crossings)

symfoniq · a year ago
Same, I just use my Passport Card when flying, which is a Real ID.

I rode in an Uber home from a rehab hospital recently after a long stay in the ICU. The guy was driving a Land Rover. I was a bit confused to say the least. The wear and tear and depreciation of that vehicle has to be crazy.
symfoniq · a year ago
Most of the people I see buying Land Rovers probably need a side gig to afford them.

Same. Lack of RDS support is the only reason we aren’t using this.
