Dark Sky would've added more value if they'd just renamed it Weather and made it the built-in app, and yet...

I do hope they'll offer Pixelmator as an included app on Macs and Pixelmator Pro alongside Logic, Finalcut, and other "Pro" software. The lack of a built-in image editor can be annoying.

Photos works for some stuff, Preview includes basic adjustments too, but sometimes you just want something like a hue/saturation adjustment instead of color temperature and pink/green tint, or multiple layers so you can experiment with different edits non-destructively.

Eh, I don’t think it’s the same thing. The gulf between “photos user” and “pixelmator” user is quite high, much more so than “weather app” and “weather app but better”.

In particular, if you have the average user Pixelmator, they’d be worse off. The same isn’t really true with weather or darksky - they really just do the same thing.

We still have iMovie and FinalCut, GarageBand and Logic. Apple has kept two different product lines before.

Do they sell matching monitors to go with these all in one style iMac's?

I'm not really an Apple person, but I can't imagine having a single monitor in this day and age and any other color would look silly next to a weird pastel pink device.

stu2b50 · a year ago
No. If you’re that kind of power user, the iMac isn’t for you. Get a Mac mini or studio.

For something that's literally designed to sit on a desk, yes... it's ridiculous to make it thinner in a dimension you never see vs one that you see all the time.

Many of these are customer service desks which are visible from the side.

Source?

stu2b50 · a year ago
When was the last time you saw a GPU with slottable memory?

For transfer speeds, look at the data sheets for the M series. Much faster than DDR4 or DDR5 RAM. In the ballpark of GPU memory.

If 32GB is the max, why not just make that the one and only model and get rid of this weird segmentation. That's a ridiculously low minimum and only just barely adequate. 8GB was practically criminal.

Or -- and I know this is crazy -- slottable RAM on a device that is designed for things other than portability. Wild, I know.

stu2b50 · a year ago
The ram is on the package for more than portability. It’s necessary for fast enough transfer speeds for the iGPU.

> There’s a very famous photo of Obama, Biden, the Joint Chiefs, and National Security advisors in the White House Situation Room watching the raid unfold in real-time…

How convenient there was a photographer in the fucking situation room! Such a coincidence.

stu2b50 · a year ago
First, there's an official position: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_Official_White_House_Pho...

Secondly, why would it be a coincidence? You don't think... the people in the situation room knew something, perhaps a situation, was happening at the time?

Otherwise, why would they _be_ in the situation room? There's usually a situation going on.

The cost of releasing with 0 marketing is that they forego the $30M tax write-off.

Why not?

Its called Schadenfreude and tbh the amount of NFT or Crypto scams, garbage and co people had to endure the last years is horrendes.

Its one thing to state in a comment that you shouldn't use NFT or crypto, but unfortunate we are not discussing banning them activly.

stu2b50 · 2 years ago
I think being into NFTs and crypto makes you a fool.

But I do not think fools should suffer vision damage, or that they deserve harm on them.

> With its high bit depth and dynamic range, log footage has many of the benefits of raw. But Apple Log is not raw, and not even “straight off the sensor.” It’s still heavily processed — denoised, tone-mapped, and color adjusted.

I wonder if this is because, at the end of the day, it is still a tiny little camera with a small sensor and small lens, and so with none of the processing magic the image would look pretty terrible under most circumstancdes.

stu2b50 · 2 years ago
RAW video isn’t like RAW photography. The sheer size of raw footage is insane - it’s normal for cameras to be unable to record RAW footage natively without an external recorder.

Thats not to say processing isn’t part of it, but even $2k mirrorless cameras don’t record RAW video internally.

Getting in an argument (vs disagreement) in real life is worthless. Getting into an argument on the Internet has even less value.

Personally I think this was an easy article for him to write because he already had the data and he wants more subscribers (please take this take as neutral opinion and not a dis to Silver)

stu2b50 · 2 years ago
That depends on what the goal is. It's worthless if you're trying to convince the other side. But in many cases, you're actually trying to convince the audience, and certainly for something like a blogpost here, I'd argue that it is not only the case, but successful, since at minimum we know it got posted to hackernews and has traction.
