What does this actually look like in use?

This input switcher UI: https://9to5mac.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2019/01/smart...

I don't have a TV with that feature but I assume you can also tell Siri to do it, or assign it to a "scene" to have quicker access to change to a particular user.

This just shows how little Apple cares about gaming on Mac. It's so sad that I spent thousands on multiple Mac devices (MBP, M Studio, etc.) only to be bottlenecked not by hardware, but by Apple's shitty approach to gaming software.

I know why they do it though. Apple can't take their undeserved 30% cut of Mac games the same way they take their iOS cuts.

We had a teacher years ago who said something that remains true until today: "everything is about money, especially the ones that appear to have non-monetary reasons."

I think their bigger problem is there's shit for documentation. You get a big list of function signatures and if you actually want to know how you're supposed to use anything you find the WWDC session from 4 years ago and hope it's still accurate.

I have one on order and can't wait, but I'm also hoping that they are successful enough to justify developing a successor to the smallest smartwatch ever made (to this day, which is wild), the excellent Pebble Time Round. Which, of course, should be named the Second Time 'Round.
wlesieutre · 11 days ago
I ordered one (the screen just fell off my Apple Watch anyway) and if they do another Time Round I'd be tempted to get one of those too.

Had a Pebble Time back when those were new and after using Apple Watch for a while I think it's time to try a return to that minimalism.

I can't imagine trying to do real work on an iPad. But, I guess there are people now that can't image the inverse?

Oh, no doubt it was hot garbage in 8. It was slightly improved in 8.1, and there were real improvements in the system in Win10 that really made it work better. Win10 was the first good version.

But Win10 is still over 10 years old. Win10 is end of life in about 2 months.

wlesieutre · 16 days ago
My experience would’ve been 8.1 already, just double checked and that’s what the Surface Pro 3 shipped with. And I don’t think they had connected standby on the prior Surfaces (at least officially).

"Short time"? Look, I appreciate that you mean the development time for the feature to be added, but S0+network was introduced over a decade ago. Early versions were in Windows 8. It shipped in Windows 8.1 in 2013. Your link is from 2025 where they're talking about S3 support no longer existing at the hardware level.

I'm really happy BSD is getting support, but they literally waited until hardware for the deprecated standard to cease to exist before implementing the new support.

That's not a short amount of time.

wlesieutre · 17 days ago
If this is what Microsoft called "connected standby" it's worth noting that the early implementation of this even on Surface hardware with Windows 8 was hot garbage. It liked to wake itself up in your bag and completely drain the battery while cooking the computer from lack of ventilation. I made a point of always turning the Surface the whole way off any time I packed it up because it was so unreliable. Best case the battery drained like 5% per hour.

Hopefully the initial BSD implementation is better than Windows did.

I 'member Adobe's Creative Suite costing hundreds of dollars. Photoshop alone clocked in at 699$, the full CS6 was 2599$ [1]. Either you were a professional and paid dearly every odd year or you were a student and used a cracked/keygen'd CS6.

Today? The full CC license is 70$ a month for individuals (30$ for students) and 100$ a month for businesses. Despite inflation, assuming a two year upgrade cycle you still get the same price for the full Adobe package when comparing CS vs CC.

One may complain a lot about Adobe (RIP Flash, and anything Gen AI can go to hell for all I care), but "enshittification" is one thing that can't reasonably be thrown at them.

As for Adobe Credits, AFAIK that's credits for fonts and assets - and again, I vastly prefer dealing with one storefront (Adobe) than having to buy and license individual font files or stock photos.

As a hobbyist, I owned CS4 (purchased on sale) and kept using it for ages. Turning it into a subscription might be fine for bleeding edge professionals who care about whatever new bells and whistles every year to finish a job 2% faster, but the ongoing costs cut out anybody who isn’t making money with it.

Thankfully there are better competitors like Affinity in that space now.

RIP Macromedia Fireworks though.

"Because I can" or "Because it's funny" are more than enough reason for most people. The fact that the hacker refunded all the customers, then emailed them to warn them that they were using a terrible app actually sounds like a pretty tame troll to me. If the hacker was truly hired by the competition to act maliciously, they could have done far, far worse.

Your friend should take this as a lesson instead of trying to deflect blame to their competitors.
