bandrami commented on Egyptian Hieroglyphs: Lesson 1   egyptianhieroglyphs.net/e... · Posted by u/jameslk

It's a class of script. A language with a script that omits vowels is called a "(pure) abjad(ic)" language. Egyptian (arguably, I'm not a linguist) and Arabic are examples of "impure abjad" languages. Usually they have diacritics that hint at vowel sounds but are otherwise devoid of explicit vowel glyphs, so I'm not sure if Egyptian strictly fits that bill - maybe someone else does. Point is, it's perhaps a bit foreign to latin-language speakers but there's a whole class of languages that do this, or something similar.

There are a few purely abjadic languages, one that comes to mind I believe is Phonician.

The writing of vowels also varied greatly over time so any sweeping statement somebody makes can attract a chorus of "yes but"

It was actually NeXTSTEP that introduced the familiar "Windows 9x" 3D control appearance and close buttons on the top right. The first versions were released around '88.

I love that interface. If I ever get a lodpi monitor again I'm going straight back to Windowmaker.

I love lightweight desktops, like this one. I just wish we could have a lightweight browser. Seems like you spin up a chrome browser and all that saving goes out the window
bandrami · 4 days ago
There are plenty of very light browsers you just have to give up on having a JS engine (which honestly can be a kind of nice way to surf, but probably not a good idea for work)

ublock requires access to all sites and data. Maybe they are trustworthy but who really knows?
bandrami · 5 days ago
I mean, I don't trust ublock, for what it's worth. I just disable javascript by default with has pretty much the same effect.

Google needs to act on removing these extensions/doing more thorough code reviews. Reputability is everything, and they can be actually valuable (e.g. LastPass, my own extension Ward)

There has to be a better system. Maybe a public extension safety directory?

bandrami · 5 days ago
Is this even a problem that code review could find? Once they have your conversation data what happens then isn't part of the plug-in.

Does tls means certificate pinning ? Can't a vpn alter dns queries to return a proxy website to your bank, using a forged certificate ?
bandrami · 5 days ago
Only if you've added a signing certificate the VPN controls to your CA chain. But at that point they don't have to do anything as complicated as you described.

People moved from a hunter gatherer society to an agrarian society because the latter was easier.
bandrami · 14 days ago
Not easier, lower-risk. Agriculture produced a standard of living with a lower mean but a much thinner left tail.

I think it appeals to the same itch that languages like Brainfuck scratch.

There's something exceedingly interesting about how you can model complexity with something extremely simple. Brainfuck is fun because it forces you to think extremely low level, because ultimately it is basically just a raw implementation of a Turing machine. I wouldn't want to write a big program in it, but it is fun to think about how you might express a complicated algorithm with it.

Similarly with CGOL, it is really interesting to see how far you can stretch really simple rules into something really complex.

I've written CGOL dozens of times, it's a common project that I do to "break in" a language I've learned, since it's not completely trivial but it's simple enough to not be frustrating, and I completely understand why math/computability-theory folks find it something to dedicate brain power to.

In the music world there are people who will build whole symphonies out of one sample, one filter, and one delay patch.

Think you mean Delhi NCR? New Delhi is pretty small, and mostly houses political and social elite.
