Man those folks should start a co-op, since they don't need their employers and are capable of creating value outside of them.

People living in the property are almost always buying it as both a place to live and as an investment.

Investment is not the same as speculation.

Even without guaranteed appreciation in value people will buy homes because they have an asset compared to alternatives like renting. When renting you’re guaranteed a loss on rent paid.

motioncuty · 4 years ago
Thats just homes, there are tons of other property classes outside of personal residential.

» What it took was a focus on good quality bike lanes outside the affluent white neighborhoods, bike accessibility at transit stations/on busses, and expansion of bikeshare to poorer neighborhoods.

I've never been to Chattanooga, TN but once I realized I can work from home I've been curious about owning a home somewhere with gigabit fiber but without ridiculously expensive real estate within commuting distance to a Costco or Sam's Club (so clearly not Jersey City, NJ or Longmont, CO).

What I noticed just looking at Google Maps Street View was that any home within my price range lacked a sidewalk. Apparently, only the wealthy people in Chattanooga, TN need sidewalks. How do we talk about bike lanes when places lack sidewalks?

Longmonts costco is in superior, not too far. Its pretty nice.

The steam store is very limited because Valve is worried about violating AML (anti-money laundering) requirements. With blockchains these worries can be alleviated because all transactions are visible. It could allow developers to create in-game currencies that can then be exchanged for currencies in other games: Imagine selling all your World of warcraft gold for some gold in Zelda.
motioncuty · 4 years ago
Funny thing is, thats probably a taxable exchange.

I think people on HN react to NFTs perfectly resaonably and I don't think you make a good argument about their value for creatives. As far as I can see NFTs at the moment have done nothing for creatives getting paid. As you point out - we have solved the problem of creatives getting paid for their work, they can sell their work, they can take commissions, or they can use patreon or similar sites. I would bet that at the moment the commission that shopify or patreon are taking are much more creator friendly than paying to mint an NFT. You say that NFTs provide a new way to interact - but what is that interaction? What does an NFT give me that sticking a badge on a shopify store saying "Creative ownership of peice of work X" does not? And I don't see how that problem has anything at all to do with being gamified?

>Never in history has anyone been able to buy shares of highly coveted art... maybe now you can

Well, firstly, let's be clear that it's highly contentious whether you meaningfully own the art if you own an NFT. But let's assume that's a solved problem. YOu can already buy shares of highly coveted art - https://www.masterworks.io . It's exactly the same model as NFTs - some individual buys the actual art, then they offering to sell "shares" of the art. The difference is that Masterworks doesn't carry all the risk of being scammed in the crypto market.

For me, as a creative, its the first and easiest way I have ever published my work.

Sure. Let me know when crypto isn't consuming the energy of a mid-sized nation and then we'll talk.
motioncuty · 4 years ago
Then can you appreciate take about the non energy abusing blockchains or will you paint them all with the same brush?

How long can a country endure if it continues to cripple learning, muzzle truth and persecute some of its most talented and capable individuals in the name of childish, incoherent ideology? Not long.

The stage of history doesn't care how many followers you have on Twitter, or how many people's lives you can destroy in the name of your religion masquerading as science. In the coming years, the US MUST LEAD. It must shake the slop from itself and rise to the role of world leader again, not just with guns but with minds, because the battlefield of the future is a battlefield of the mind. If it does not rise, China or Russia will be glad to.

Either "wokeness" dies, or the US dies. It's that simple.

Are you talking about modern "wokeness" or are you talking about the while history of the United States as a primarily Christian state? Because I still feel more crippled, muzzled, and persecuted by us Christian morality/ideology than any recent up surgance in "wokeness".

Interesting—it sounds like I may have overestimated how cold it gets there. Basically I'm looking for a climate that is noticeably warmer in than the winter than my current location, Indianapolis.
motioncuty · 4 years ago
It can get cold but its mostly dry. Better than mid atlantic winters.

I feel the pain, seeing non-trivial updates for Ruby, Elasticsearch and Postgres (thanks AWS) this year.

Can not agree with the React part though.

They keep so many things backward compatible. React 16 is 3, 4 years old now? I've updated pretty big code base from early 16 to latest 16 version painlessly - like in a day. Used some of the available code-modes for some really old part of the project. It worked flawlessly. Currently there are console warnings to fix certain things and that is it. No breaking changes, no nothing.

Now, React 17 will be a problem - there are a lots of 3rd party UI libs that will not work with it. But I think we are pretty well set to use react 16 for the next couple of years, making it work for 6, 7 years total. I think that is a century in terms of FE and is great.

Also, "...React pulling a sneaky on everyone and introducing hooks, which was a pretty bad move, especially if you needed to migrate to them" - just don't use hooks then - no problem.

What are the benefits to updating frontend packages. Are there security vulnerabilities that I should be worrying about if most of my npm dependecies dont get updated.
