Same issue here. Just no power at all.

Reddit threads suggest MOSFET problems are common among mini PCs. Any ideas?

This is especially frustrating because I have an ancient dell optiplex and dell precision with i3-2100 and i3-5xx that still work. I occasionally need to open the box to reseat the ram for whatever reason after a power failure but by an large these machines are over ten years old!

Completely off-topic: I find it odd that we easily use this argument for humanoid robots (and also self-driving cars), but handicapped people are still bound to wheelchairs and have to constantly fight to change the environment and make it wheelchair-accessible.

If we applied the same logic, there should be a massive effort to ditch wheelchairs and build exoskeletons instead.

Knowing the kind of markup on wheelchairs that means a YouTuber wheel chair look like a bargain (see Jerry rig everything wheelchair), I can't imagine how much the US healthcare "industry" would charge for a "medical grade" exoskeleton.

I guess we'll never know what would have, no matter how sure you seem to be.

I, for one, am still a little bitter about what could have been if not for a couple of those bailouts.

Did you also oppose the government stepping in when Silicon Valley Bank collapsed? The FDIC had a clear upper limits. It shouldn't have paid depositors more than that.

So many online services use the proximity of phones to determine things like related persons and related accounts. Facebook is notorious for this. In one building I lived at Facebook would constantly show me the names of everyone coming in and out as "You might know this person" even though I had no idea who they were.

i spend a lot of time thinking about this.

At humanlayer we have some OSS projects that are 99% written by AI, and a lot of it was written by AI under the supervision of developer(s) that are no longer at the company.

Every now and then we find that there are gaps in our own understanding of the code/architecture that require getting out the old LSP and spelunking through call stacks.

It's pretty rare though.

> It's pretty rare though.

It will only get more common with time.

What makes you so sure it will have a repo?

I don’t recall the last time Claude suggested anything about version control :-)

mcny · 20 hours ago
Claude will give what you asked for. My sensible chuckle moment was when I asked it to create a demo asp net web API and it did everything but add the authorize tag or any kind of authentication. I asked what was missing and until i mentioned it, it didn't mention authentication or authorization at all.

I’m not sure what ‘the US’ means here. In California it’s now required (as of next year) for schools to limit or restrict student phone use, and several other states have done similar things as mentioned in the article [1].

I think it is reasonable for a teacher to say you can't actively use your phone while class is in session but not appropriate for them to say you can't have your phone on you. It is also inappropriate to say your phone must be in some special pouch that only they can open, etc.

This is just my own opinion, of course. I think it is also inappropriate to say you need someone's permission to use the restroom. All my opinions of appropriate ness is mostly about adults behaving like adults though. They probably don't make sense when it comes to children?

The people that are good but dangerous drivers will drive well and safely during tests, so you won't catch them.

We need a consistently reliable public transit system before we tell people they can't drive for one reason or another.

I appreciate your perspective but clearly most UBI advocates are talking about something much sooner. However my response to your vision is that even if "work" is totally automated or redundant, the resources (building materials) and the energy to power the robots or whatever, will be more expensive and tightly controlled than ever. Power and wealth simply wont allow everything to be accessible to everyone. The idea that people would be able to build enormous mansions (or personal aircraft carriers or spaceships) just sounds rather absurd, no offense, but come on.
mcny · 9 days ago
I think we are talking about two different things. The UBI I'm talking about won't allow you to have an enormous mansion, maybe just enough to avoid starving. The main plus point is it doesn't do means testing. The second plus point is if you really hate your job, you can quit without starving. This means we can avoid coworkers who really would like to not be there.

I think it is a solid idea. I don't know how it fits in the broader scheme of things though. If everyone in the US gets a UBI of the same amount, will people move somewhere rent is low?

From wikipedia:

> a social welfare proposal in which all citizens of a given population regularly receive a minimum income in the form of an unconditional transfer payment, i.e., without a means test or need to perform work.

It doesn't say you aren't allowed to work for more money. My understanding is you can still work as much as you want. You don't have to to get this payment. And you won't be penalized for making too much money.
