I don't understand why ECC memory is not the norm these days. It is only slightly more expensive, but solves all these problems. Some consumer mainboards even support it already.
hurfdurf · 7 days ago
Why? Intel making and keeping it workstation/Xeon-exclusive for a premium for too long. And AMD is still playing along not forcing the issue with their weird "yeah, Zen supports it, but your mainboard may or may not, no idea, don't care, do your own research" stance. These days it's a chicken and egg problem re: price and availability and demand. See also https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29838403

> Ai Pin will still allow for offline features like battery level, etc.

If I remember correctly, battery level was practically the only "offline feature" of the pin. A device whose only working feature is to check its own battery level isn't much use.

EU regulation on that should come into force in Feb 2027.
hurfdurf · 11 days ago
Seeing how Motorola is trying to bypass the regulation for software updates, I don't have any hopes. https://www.androidauthority.com/motorola-eu-software-update...

Once upon a time, you could strip formatting from the clipboard in notepad with ^V ^A ^C, for example if you were trying to paste from edge into word. There's still a market for a non-rich text editor, without autosave, cloud, account login or AI.
hurfdurf · 16 days ago
Apparently pasting unformatted text in browsers can be done with Ctrl+Shift+V. Pasting it in Office is Ctrl+Alt+V. Always the odd one out. Taken from here: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20220906-00/?p=10...

on a messaging service primarily branded for teens

If that was the case, they wouldn't need the age-verification for "adult" features, because there would be no "adult" features. Right?

There is a setting to control which app that key opens.
hurfdurf · a month ago
But you cannot change it to behave as a single key (i.e. Ctrl), only what the shortcut associated to it does (Shift+Win+F23 IIRC).

They also provide security updates for those old OSes for quite a while, AFAIK.
hurfdurf · a month ago
Some security updates.

Note: Because of dependency on architecture and system changes to any current version of Apple operating systems (for example, macOS 26, iOS 26 and so on), not all known security issues are addressed in previous versions (for example, macOS 15, iOS 18 and so on).
