Yeah but that's like saying that there are so many "openings" in chess, it makes it hard for newcomers.

That's the game! The 'inside rules' for a cryptic are what makes it cryptic. Without them you just have a word puzzle.

asutekku · 9 months ago
The thing with chess, even if you don't know the rules, you can still play and (potentially) lose the game. If you don't know some random american trivia, you're stuck forever.

> Without constant ad spend it's very very difficult to acquire new users.

If you're not VC funded, who gives a fuck how many users you have or how quickly you get more?

Unless the cost of whatever backing online resources you need doesn't scale fairly closely with the number of users you have, the only thing number of users matters for is the size of the check you get at the end of the year, rather than the profit percentage from that check.

If you want to make a living with apps, you kind of have to advertise.

I’m guessing it’s actually răchie from pine cones, not needles. Either way, now I’m curious to try it.

Drinks made out of pine needles are pretty common. They have a very distinct nice taste.

This is really cool, but I don't think this is very useful.

In my opinion: if you can use vim, you can probably code, or at least figure it out without too much trouble. If you can code, then you don't need a spreadsheet. You can just write a program to crunch the numbers, or produce a report etc.

Excel is so popular, because it is a way for non-coders to crunch a bunch of numbers in a relatively easy way. And the best way to get the answers that they are getting out of the spreadsheet is to write code. But because they can't code, they have to use a spreadsheet.

If there is a use case for spreadsheets that is not better served by some real code, I'm interested to hear what it is.

You could also make the "speed" argument (just a quick calculation) for spreadsheets, but in that case, I find something like a python REPL just as quick, and still better anyway.

i am able to program but hell no i will start to crunch numbers programmatically unless it's something a basic spreadsheet can't do. i use spreadsheets exactly because i don't need to code and create something from scratch.

but while this is not for me (no interest in learning vim), i'm pretty sure many other people will find this useful

> The rally has also been supported by a weaker yen, which has shed about 6% against the dollar so far this year and seems on track to drop to to 33-year lows touched late last year.

We just got back from Tokyo and the prices for everything were crazy low. Ordered a bunch of sushi at a mall sushi place in Kyoto for what it would cost for Chipotle in DC. It was a huge shock when we flew back through SF and paid $13 each for a taco truck burrito in Millbrae.

The Japanese folks I’ve spoken to are pretty grumbly about the weak yen, though.

Mall sushi has always been cheap in japan

I know these Japan stories for Americans might be awe-inspiring, but man if there isn't crap loads of waste from all the products they sell here. Yesterday during my grocery shopping each individual glass container product got its own separate paper bag, meat was given a plastic bag even thought it was already wrapped in plastic and my juices got another plastic bag. Even the wines I got were given this plastic wrap, just not to hit each other.

I get that compared to the US the recycling here might be better (and yeah, I do need to separate my trash), but this is pure "oh so mysterious and oriental Japan so great" article. What help is recycling for if you're producing insane amounts of unnecessary waste.

Add a few commonly compared timezones by default. I should be able to load this and get to work, without setup.
asutekku · 2 years ago
common for you != common for everyone else. i live in japan, i would have absolutely no need for some random us / europe comparison

Congratulations on the launch. Looks great! A couple of questions if you don't mind me asking:

1. Why did you build this tool when we have thousands of time zone comparison websites, apps and inbuilt functionality in smartphone time app?

2. Google already does this natively

3. It will be really tough to rank this on Google

4. Do you plan on monetizing this?

your questions are literally the reason why internet is not what it used to be. not everything needs to be about money, people can do things out of their own interest and needs

Who here actually has and uses a 4K device? I still haven't gone higher than 1440p, and even on that, I don't mind if my content is 1080p. I rarely even notice.

(I also hate >60 FPS, for what it's worth.)

asutekku · 2 years ago
Most modern tvs are 4k these days and 1080p vs 4k is very visible in these
