GiveOver commented on Apex Legends is taking away its support for the Steam Deck and Linux   theverge.com/2024/10/31/2... · Posted by u/tosh

I always struggled with Apex Legends on Linux. It didn't pre-load shaders, which led to a very jittery experience for the first round or two. Even after that you still get jitters here and there when it needs to load something new. It wasn't worth doing every time there was a new update.

Already feels like they can work around that by having the "Don't wait on hold, we'll call you back when an agent is ready" feature.
GiveOver · a year ago
I prefer that feature massively. Being on hold sucks, you can't fully commit to doing another task because you need to listen out for the fuzzy elevator music to switch to a human voice. Even worse when the fuzzy music switches to a recorded human voice every 30 seconds to remind you you're still on hold.

Having a call back means I can forget about it and go on with my day until they call me.

Technically Signal solves this problem with safety codes.

The UI really could stand to be more assertive about what they mean though.

GiveOver · 2 years ago
I notice every time somebody gets a new phone because it says "Your safety number with x has changed" but whenever I've spoken about it with friends, they have no idea what it means. An additional sentence could help here, such as "You might want to double check that you're really talking to x" or the classic "It's possible someone is doing something nasty". Although I understand that this would definitely scare a lot of people, maybe even push them into thinking Signal is insecure.
GiveOver commented on Ask HN: How is the Spotify app so bad?    · Posted by u/erlich
al_borland · 2 years ago
I recently moved from Apple Music to Spotify to see what all the fuss is about, thinking it might get me listening to more music, or different stuff than Apple keeps playing. Using it feels like work and I don’t really get the how they expect users to use the app. I’m tempted to go see if there is a video from the designers explaining their vision so I can use it right. As of now it seems like a mess.

Also, their AI DJ makes no sense. The worst part about radio is the DJ saying nonsense between songs, and they added AI to say nonsense between songs. I was just looking for a way for it to play songs I’d probably like based on other songs/artists I like. With Apple I’d simply tell Siri, “play good music” and it would play a radio station with my name on it (without an interrupting fake DJ).

I too hate the DJ. Not sure why they're trying to push it, the existing system of "daily mix" and "discover weekly" playlists work well in my opinion.
GiveOver commented on Study finds that once people use cargo bikes, they like their cars much less   arstechnica.com/cars/2024... · Posted by u/ossusermivami

The survey was strategically done in late Summer. I concede some people could still do their shopping in Hamburg's raining 2°C, but I'd guess the comparison charts would not be as cheerful.

I found it bizarre that "weather-independence" was one of the least important metrics. I commuted by bike for years and it's miserable in wind and rain. The numbers of fellow cyclists varied massively depending on the weather.
GiveOver commented on Spotify will end service in Uruguay due to bill requiring fair pay for artists   mixmag.net/read/spotify-e... · Posted by u/pseudolus

Spotify take 70% of their revenue and distribute it split by stream count. I honestly fail to see what's "unfair" about that
GiveOver · 2 years ago
I suppose the argument wouldn't be about how their revenue is distributed, rather that they should be charging more for their subscription (which is, in my opinion, insanely cheap). They're able to keep it that cheap because they're underpaying artists.

I hope you wouldn't consider this answer "gaslighting" if it came from a human being
GiveOver · 2 years ago
I think gaslighting will soon be redefined as being slightly dishonest or unhelpful in any situation.

> We watch Marvel movie after Marvel movie where each one is advertising for the next movie.

This is an absurd statement - the movies in of themselves are entertainment and not solely an advertisement.

GiveOver · 3 years ago
You could say this about anything. My shampoo bottle is an advertisement to buy the next bottle. My car is an advertisement for other people to buy the same car.

Tithing, it's called in Christianity. You give ten percent of your income (in theory) to the church. This is what's known outside of the religious sphere as "grifting". :-D

The same youtuber put Jim Carrey's face onto James Bond as well. And face-swapped Jim Carrey and Hugh Jackman.
