Thanks for reminding me to turn off Full Disk Access for Terminal. I'm not sure why I had that one turned on.
al_borland · 18 hours ago
What would you do in the terminal without it?

Actually… I think this be solved by AI answers. I don’t look up commands on random websites, instead I ask an LLM for that kind of stuff. At the very least, check your commands with an LLMs.
al_borland · 18 hours ago
Don’t the LLMs get their information from these random websites? They don’t know what is good and what is malware. Most of the time when I get an AI answer with a command in it, there is a reference to a random reddit post, or something similar.

Because it's very dangerous and first responders access in national parks isn't always easy. You can obtain a permit to do it, however, see this memo that summarizes the current situation:

It seems danger and first responder access would also be a problem for free solo climbing, yet that gets a pass.

Would there be liability lawsuits for this happening on public land? Might it be more a matter of them not wanting to do body clean up once a week?
al_borland · 3 days ago
This seems like something a liability waiver and an escrow account with money for body clean up (if things go bad) would solve. A little red tape, sure, but not illegal.

Sadly we are going to get more ads (Apple Maps is next). If it goes much further people will start questioning whether Apple products are worth the premium price.
al_borland · 3 days ago
I have used Apple products for over 20 years, because I felt like a customer instead of the product. Apple’s services strategy has changed this perception. I question Apple’s competitive advantage when they shift to a Google-like business model. They are actively throwing away the very thing that made them a unique and valuable player in the industry, and for what? A couple extra percent profit in the short term?

Steve Jobs always said he wanted to make insanely great products for customers. Products they’d be proud to recommend to their family. It feels like Cook lost his way, spending too much time focusing on the stock, instead of letting great products drive adoption, and letting the stock follow.

If the rumors are true that Apple is preparing for a change at the top, I how we see a dramatic change in the services strategy and Apple can get back to making great products that people actually want to use.

I've an avid Apple News user, and while I haven't seen the sorts of ads in the article, I do gets lots of ads for tax filing software. Namely, Intuit TurboTax. They are the only ads I ever get.

What's more, if you even touch them while scrolling, it triggers the "download app" screen, even if I don't explicitly tap. This is new as of a few weeks ago.

al_borland · 3 days ago
Serious question, how/why do you keep using an app that behaves like this?

I subscribed to Apple One for a period of time and tried to use News+. Even when paying, it seems like most of the article were behind a paywall. That, plus the ads, I didn’t understand what I was paying for. I can have a much better user experience with RSS.

Generally if all the ads you see are scammy, it means you probably are using some form of tracking/privacy protection.

When an ad network has a strong profile on you, legitimate companies pay good money for those ad slots. When they don't really know who you are, only bottom feeders bid on the ad slots you see.

In a way, it almost acts as retribution for not submitting to the anti-privacy machine.

Any ad provider that is going to serve up scams to anyone is an ad provider I don’t trust. Giving more information to an untrustworthy company seems like a losing plan. Those more target ads also mean more effective manipulation to get people to buy things they likely don’t need.
al_borland commented on Ask HN: Tech Debt War Stories    · Posted by u/erubini_fg
al_borland · 5 days ago
Most of the tech debt I deal with comes from projects that are declared a success by management before they are actually done, and no one is officially responsible for maintaining it. The teams are told to move on to something new, the old thing never gets fully finished and dies a long slow death, because no one wants to officially say that it was a waste of time and should be shut down.

Do this repeatedly and it really starts to add up. At times we are running 3-4 platforms for the same thing. Two are legacy with one or two critical things still running on them with no support. One is “production”, but no one is actually paying much attention to it. And one is in development or pilot… it’s all anyone can talk about, but it doesn’t actually work. While that in-house developed pilot is going on, we’ll also be told to do a POC with a tool from some outside vendors.

AI won’t solve political and bureaucratic problems. If anything, it will make it worse, as turnover to new products is expected faster.

To get rid of technical debt, an organization needs to focus. Which means saying “no” to most things, instead of trying to do it all.

al_borland commented on Ask HN: Does a good "read it later" app exist?    · Posted by u/buchanae

I can relate to that. I have a ton of bookmarks and open tabs that I've been meaning to read for weeks or months now. I guess that's why I'm hoping a daily reading list might give me a bite-sized chunk to work through.
al_borland · 5 days ago
That problem I found is that each day brings more potential things to read. The slow news days where one can dip into their backlog of articles seems to be a thing of the past.

The key would be having something that could surface what is worth your time, and finding a way for those items to take priority over the new things coming at you… which would also need to be evaluated for whats worth your time.

After seeing a comment here on HN, I gave up on the idea of read-it-later services. I’ve tried most of them. They are where my good intentions go to die. If something isn’t worth reading in the moment, I’m probably never going to read it, so I just avoid the shame and guilt these apps brought me.
