Trump has two basic strategies:

1) Double down because the one with the most money/power will eventually win with that strategy.

2) Bully everyone he thinks has less money/power than him so he can use strategy #1.

The thing about the bully strategy number two though is that you have to keep using your power and keep it on display for it to work. That means he has to keep doing bully like things, over and over, no matter how dumb they are. The thing about strategy 1 is that you can never admit you were wrong/back down because then you loose all the doubling you have put in. We are seeing the result of these two simplistic strategies at play. He will only stop because it has all come crashing down and even then he will not back down. He has never had to use a different strategy because he has been rich his whole life. He has never once been 'smart', just rich and we are all paying the price of that as everyone else has his entire life.

In game theory, he’s grim trigger and it shows in multiple ways. I suppose we’ve never seen him forced to play a game in which he’s not allowed to change the rules.

I have suspicion that we are currently seeing the administration at the least strange it will be for the next four years.

We are in the phase where influencers are jostling to be the one who controls the black list. Navarro and Musk hissed about it last week, but Loomer has stronger game.

Do you use it? Tell me more, why this one?
ttyprintk · 8 months ago
No, it has a feature where it connects to your brokerage in order to execute the trades. That’s rather involved for me.

Turns out I was wrong and it has been submitted: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42682786

This thread is misunderstanding the job of Secretary of Defense. They aren't interns learning from the generals how to lead an army or plan logistics. They're project managers who ensure the generals are aligned with the President's goals.
ttyprintk · 8 months ago
I would say that they oversee the Pentagon and ensure that the military stays in civilian control. In the past, theories from war games percolate through the Joint Chiefs, who meet with SECDEF before presenting options to the President.

I was surprised Hegseth even desired a side channel that had the potential downside that he could accidentally text the coordinates of a carrier. Stuff like that gets Generals relieved immediately.

“… after he mistakenly saved his number months before under the contact of someone else he intended to add.”

This is precisely why the government has its own very inconvenient devices and network, which cannot possibly fall victim to the same completely understandable human error. Had the team been using secure devices on the secure network, no journalist would ever have been accidentally added to the chat.

That these people are in charge of national security is beyond ridiculous. It speaks volumes about the unprecedented political setup we find ourselves in that such frankly inexperienced and naive people are in charge after Senate confirmations that were intended to protect us all from such a mistake.

ttyprintk · 8 months ago
When not being a Florida politician, Mike Waltz has had this role since the early 2000s (for Cheney) and believes contact fields “get sucked” through invisible series of tubes. He’s never seen a Senate confirmation and I bet never will.

Oh the product offerings are way ahead of that. Until recently, you could invest in Inverse Jim Cramer. Plenty of passive and active funds for Nancy Pelosi.

The data is not new as a number of other systems cover this but I am happy for it to get more press.

There are a couple things on my top dislikes of US politics and not having more restrictions on politicians is up near the top.

I have to follow much more stringent disclosures and controls as part of a large private entity that does investment. It’s absurd that folks making policy, who have a potentially closer ear to the ground are not more restricted.

The 30 days self reporting disclosure period is a joke too. It’s after the fact, has no real penalty for being late and AFAIK they don’t maintain any real restriction lists so it has no impact.

We're spending a trillion a year to service debt. The equivalent of ~45% of all income tax revenues.

Utter insanity.

ttyprintk · 8 months ago
A lot of Trump supporters would identify the super-rich as the right demographic to pay that.

Do you have sources?

(I also subscribe to the "genuine chaos" theory, but your comment makes sense)

The first three points:

It’s weird that Congress, the body constitutionally responsible for tariffs and their results, acts like they don’t know about it.
