Did a high school project on the jam and replay attack mentioned here: https://github.com/trishmapow/rf-jam-replay. Low cost SDRs have been a real game changer in letting the average Joe get started in this space. Good to see that more unis have courses with this type of hands on experimentation.

Are you sure about people dying from lack of sleep ? I read the opposite but I lack proof. To me sleeping is an essential "maintenance" of the body & the mind but that lack of sleep wouldn’t kill you in itself.

However there is no doubt sleeping is essential to psychological and physical health.

I also sometimes struggle with insomnia and I recommend reading "Why we sleep". It helped me understand sleep better than I would have thought and it actually helped me manage insomnia. The book is also actually really captivating which is a good thing given I thought I knew enough about sleep hygiene. I was so wrong.

Next time you see a scene in a movie where people enter a house and you can see both the interior and exterior, think about the 1000x ratio and how much artificial light was needed inside the house to balance the lighting in the shot. (Assuming it's a real sunlit exterior and not a sound stage, of course.)

Cinema cameras also have >14 stops of dynamic range that can be extracted in post.

Phones have multiple lenses and sensors, but they don't have multiple sets of sensor readout capacity. Even when the theoretical maximum pixel througput (as in biggest sensor the SoC can be paired with) is big enough on paper to do all sensors in a time division multiplex, I wouldn't be surprised if the switch wasn't fast enough.

(personally I'd love to have a camera app that did all-lens release for stills, I'm of the "beyond point-and-shoot" school of photography, shoot without much pointing, sort them out later)

Samsung has directors view which records front and back simultaneously. Would be surprised if flagship devices can't do this due to hardware limitations.

Wow! Now I feel less bad about using "ping 8.8.8.8" as my canonical "is my internet uplink down" command…
trishmapow2 · 3 years ago
CloudFlare is better since you can type ping 1.1 which becomes 1.0.0.1

You are not supposed to be asleep at the wheel with any of these "autopilots", nor are you supposed to be reading books or looking at your phone. What are you doing that you can't take back control of your wheel in less than a few seconds ?
trishmapow2 · 3 years ago
Article clearly says that "In Germany, drivers can legally use their cellphones while Drive Pilot is engaged, a first for semi-autonomous systems". However, you can't go to sleep.

There is a very large crypto currency project, holding 9.3 billion dollars, that believes that variable names should be mostly meaningless, and furthermore that all nouns should be three letters long, and all verbs four. Here's the start of the method "frob()", from the file "vat":

        Urn memory urn = urns[i][u];
        Ilk memory ilk = ilks[i];
        // ilk has been initialised
        require(ilk.rate != 0, "Vat/ilk-not-init");

        urn.ink = add(urn.ink, dink);
        urn.art = add(urn.art, dart);
        ilk.Art = add(ilk.Art, dart);

        int dtab = mul(ilk.rate, dart);
        uint tab = mul(ilk.rate, urn.art);

This seems to be MakerDAO VAT contract, for those curious. At least it has comments explaining everything at the top.
