I'm having a hard time getting a job and this hurts :(

Don't pay much attention to what Sokoloff said. In theory, he's kinda right, but that's not how it works in the real world. And I don't know if you and him/her live in the same area/country.

I've had a rough time looking for jobs, due to 2 main reasons: not getting it right when adapting the resume to a job posting. Many ATS just discard resumes that doesn't have the exact words that they use on the job posting. Even if you are saying the same thing with different words...

The other was the phone interviews, made by a HR person looking for who knows what. For most applies that I did, I didn't get a phone interview. After phone interviews, didn't hear back.

I only got 2 technical interviews for like, 100 applications. One was for the job I'm currently in, the other I declined because I got the job offer to my current job. Both I got through recommendations, even if the people recommending me didn't know me. But they looked at my resume and put it stray to the HR manager for them to talk to me.

I also had a friend (not in IT) that was not getting anything. I told he to look for recommendations. She went to LinkedIn, found someone that worked or used to work at a company she wanted to go, and talked to the person, got recommended, and got the job.

edit: this in Canada

In my experience, making reviews easier to give causes the review quality and usefulness to go down. This happened when Netflix went from 5 stars to a simple like/dislike. I’m not sure why Amazon didn’t just block non-verified-purchaser reviews, increasing spammer costs significantly.

I suspect that Amazon reviews are going to be even less useful now. Especially given things like this:

> Amazon does not provide many specifics about how a product’s overall star rating is calculated, other than stating that it is not a simple average but instead uses “machine-learned models” that take into account factors such as how recent the rating or review is and whether it was a verified purchase or not.

I think that on Netflix's case they are not going for reviews. They want to know what you like, to suggest something you'll probably like too. Doesn't matter if it's 4 or 5 stars.

> Young people starting out in the labor market often have The Fear that they will never find a job or never find a good job or another good job.

Young people fear it. Older people know it.

> Quit.

Not everyone is a 20-something silicon valley kid with companies falling all over themselves to throw money at them.

Hiring is effectively broken these days - especially in the software world.

If you're not from a top-flight university, maybe a little older, or in any other way less flashy/attractive in the job market, it can take months or sometimes years to get decent job interviews.

You can't just walk away from a decent income because idealism.

THIS! Consider someone with a spouse and kids... Let's just quit, right?

No energy source is 100% safe. People die when working on windmills and hydroelectric disasters are way more deadly than nuclear disasters. I think 100% safe is an unreasonable requirement.

if a windmill falls/explodes, the area wouldn't be unliveable and contaminated for centuries...

I'm completely onboard with price transparency, but am skeptical as to the utility of it to the consumer. I suspect a lot of people will get "oh, we thought it'd be X, but it turned out to be Y, which is 3x the price" sort of scenarios.

I'm sure "colonoscopy, clear" and "colonoscopy, with removal of polyp and pathology on it" will have different prices, but you won't know which it is until after the procedure.

Which is expected, and kinda ok. At least, if you do a colonoscopy and there's nothing else, no complications, it would be that price.

Eh, it pretty much is. At least in the US

I have a pretty unique name, you can search my first name + "voter registration" and get my address, phone number, and birthdate

Even if my name was common, it'd still be out there

thiagomgd · 6 years ago
But on twitter you don't need to give anyone your real name. THAT'S the thing. There should be no way to tie your twitter account to you, unless you specifically allow them to share your information.

I was already thinking of deleting my twitter account. This is just an extra incentive

Good post. It would be nice to see a follow up with brands that don't track you.

It's a ripe space. I'm using notion mostly right now, but I've also used:

-Coda.io (big, more scriptable player)

-Hypernote (super new player, but with a cool new take on inter-note relationships)

-Tiddlywiki (super customizable, really fast -- but also has a fair amount of footguns)

-Airtable (only played with it a few times but it's usually mentioned in the same breath as notion, I notice)

Hopefully someday we'll achieve Alan Kay's dream :)

Have you looked at Wiki.js? I played around with it a little bit and it seemed nice

It lost me at "for humans". I'm not even kidding: it's trite, demeaning to every similar project (with the implication that everything else is obviously for weirdos, not like you and me, amirite?), and shows a kind of naivete (everything else is overly complicated, lol, and I have no idea why that would be!).

It was momentarily cute the first time I saw it but that faded quickly. By the 100th "for humans" project, it had become a distinct code smell.

thiagomgd · 6 years ago
Agree! I just assume everything posted here is "for humans". So... what's the differential here?
