I don't know why you're getting downvoted for this, but it's the same thing for me. The For You tab is a cesspool, but if you stick to the Following tab and unfollow anybody who says pretty much anything political, it's actually a pretty nice platform.

I signed up for a new account a month ago for a specific purpose, and the default timeline was full of literal Nazi crap, like dumb 1488 references, and blaming weather on Jews, and other bullshit like that. I did absolutely nothing to get that. I signed up and that’s what it showed me until I went on a spree of blocking stuff.

What is the difference in behavior? They both look like they would delete the user's home directory. I assume the latter would try to delete a directory literally named with a tilde instead?
kstrauser · 3 hours ago
The latter passes each item in the list into the child processes’s argv, as-is, without the shell parsing them. That means this would delete a single item named “~/ some file”, spaces and all, instead of three items named “~/“, “some”, and “file”.

Edit: I’m typing this on my phone, so brevity won over explicitness. The latter probably wouldn’t expand ~. Imagine a file named “/home/me/ some file” for a better example.

Welcome back to reddit! There is a third party app called Red Reader, it's free.

Nah. I’m not going to kick that habit twice.

Pretty much anything longer then a throwaway one liner I write in python.

Would be cool if python had a pipe operator though.

The back ticks in ruby is pretty ergonomic too. Wish python had a simpler way to run commands. Kind of tedious to look up subprocess run arguments and also break things up into arrays.

kstrauser · 9 hours ago
You can always set shell=True and pass in an entire command line as a string, but… don’t do that. It seems really nice until the first time you get the shell escaping wrong, and then it’s something you tend never to do again.

For example,

  subprocess.run(“rm -rf ~/ some file”, shell=True)
and

  subprocess.run([“rm”, “-rf”, “~/ some file”])
have significant different behavior.

They are doing everything they can to increase number of users before IPO.

Redit from a text based place, became a place driven by pictures (Can we call that "instagrami-zation"?).

The thing, is that discussion is what made reddit good. Now it's mostly low quality pictures, bots and comments written by marketers.

Then AI models and google search are trained on this garbage.

I wonder if someone will finally disrupt reddit

They’ve already IPOed.

It's been my belief for over 20 years now that dedicated/instrumented roads for autonomous vehicles is the only way autonomous cars will ever be a thing, at mass scale, other than via the invention of true AGI (which I still don't think we're close to). Such roads becoming a thing within the next 6 years though, I'd doubt.
kstrauser · 11 hours ago
I think there might be a trial stretch of road somewhere in a few years, although surely not widespread. Such a thing feels inevitable to me, though, if we’re going to have self-driving cars at all.

The management of reddit doesn't seem to use reddit at all and they seem to be unaware of the fact that a) the "new" layout just isn't that great, and b) their mobile app is terrible.

They killed third-party apps, which were way better than their garbage app and they don't seem to realize how much it annoys their users.

kstrauser · 12 hours ago
I thank them for that, because forcing me back to their horrid app broke me of my habit of hanging out there.

I’ve got six digits of karma, and I’d rather walk away than suffer through its awful UI.

> Steve Martin is one of the best banjo players out there

And he’s great with a lasso!

I love his albums with Edie Brickell, he’s good with Steep Canyon Rangers, and more recently have heard him shine with Alison Brown (banjo), Sierra Hull (mandolin), and others in his latest tour.

If you’re looking for the top banjo players technically, you might check out Béla Fleck, Jens Kruger, Noam Pikelny, Tony Trischka, Bill Keith, Don Reno, and Earl Scruggs. I’ve personally heard superhuman performances by Jens Kruger in-person and I grew up on Scruggs.

> What's the rationale?

Gift cards are used by phishers. In our institution, we routinely get personalized spam mails (in the name of the corresponding group lead of the recipient, sent via GMail -- this is not low-effort) that ask whether they are available and, when (accidentally) responding, ask for Apple gift cards.

My coworkers report these to me every single business day. They’re usually like:

> Hey, it’s me, your CEO. I’m in a meeting with our big customer and I need an urgent favor. Thanks! You’re a life saver.

> - Mr. CEO

I have a bet with a friend that in 6 years there’ll be autonomous-only highway lanes somewhere, like HOV lanes we have today. It makes perfect sense to me. If you have part of the road where you can predict how every vehicle will act, especially if they can coordinate, you could end up with basically a high speed train of tightly packed vehicles zipping along at record traffic densities.
