Can you blame folks? Their Teslas were supposed to be appreciating assets[1] that were able to drive them coast-to-coast[2] by now. I'd be mad too.

Do I also have to disclose using tab completion? My IDE uses machine learning for completion suggestions.

Do I need to disclose that I wrote a script to generate some annoying boilerplate? Or that my IDE automatically templates for loops?

AlexandrB · 3 days ago
It's a spectrum, isn't it? I wouldn't want to waste my time reviewing a bunch of repetitive code generated from some script or do something like review every generated template instantiation in a C++ code base. I would want to review the script/template definition/etc., but what's the equivalent for AI? Should the review just be the prompt(s)?

Edit: Also, it's always good to provide maximal context to reviewers. For example, when I use code from StackOverflow I link the relevant answer in a comment so the reviewer doesn't have to re-tread the same ground I covered looking for that solution. It also gives reviewers some clues about my understanding of the problem. How is AI different in this regard?

Yes. I miss how wildly creative shooters used to be. In just UT[2K4] you had the translocator, the shock rifle (with a hidden third firing mode), and movement like wall jumping.

Who profits from lying about the acceleration of climate change?
AlexandrB · 6 days ago
To play devil's advocate: China. Not only does China profit because it's a key supplier of renewable technologies, but increasing the cost of energy in other countries while continuing to heavily rely on coal themselves[1] makes them more competitive for manufacturing.

What a terrible, utter bullshit article. Full of half truths and fear mongering. smh.
AlexandrB · 6 days ago
> fear mongering

The last 10 years of tech "innovation" is basically what the article describes but happening to other tech products[1]. So, why is this fear mongering? It's basically inevitable unless:

a. There's legislation. But I would bet on legislation for the opposite - storing chats forever - instead.

b. AI moves to on-device where users have control of their own data. Also unlikely considering how much tech loves web technologies and recurring revenue streams.

This doesn't pass the sniff test, governments generate wealth all the time. Public education, public healthcare, public research, public housing. These are all programs that generate an enormous amount of wealth and allow citizens to flourish.
AlexandrB · 8 days ago
None of these are unique to the government and can also be created privately. The fact that government can create wealth =/= the government is the source of all wealth.

Epic is scummy as hell.

They try to play folk hero when it suits them, but someone who actually cared about individual well-being wouldn't lock Linux players out of their flagship games, or use dark patterns like artificial scarcity to get people to spend more time/money in their ecosystem.

AlexandrB · 9 days ago
Yes, if Epic is the cure it's worse than the disease. I do think Steam needs competition to keep them innovative/honest though that's why I try to buy stuff on GoG when possible.

I am generally anti-capitalist, and a big reason is because I don't think capitalism, inherently and fundamentally, can become anything other than what it is now. The benefit its provided is rarely accurately weighed against the harms, and for people who disproportionately benefit, like most here on HN, it's even harder to see the harms.

Anti-capitalist sentiment was incredibly widespread in the US during the 19th century through the 1930s, because far more people were personally impacted, and most needed look no further than their own lives to see it. If nothing else, capitalism has become more sophisticated in disguising its harms, and acclimating people to them to such an extent that many become entirely incapable of seeing any harm at all, or even imagining any other way for a society to be structured, despite humanity having exited for 100,000+ years.

AlexandrB · 9 days ago
Capitalism has many harms, but what's the alternative? Communism is worse - much worse.

I'm not generally anti-capitalist, but what capitalism has become at this point in history means that technology is no longer for helping people or helping society.

Imagine the DVR being invented today. A commercial device that helps you skip ads. It would never be allowed to happen.

AlexandrB · 9 days ago
Yes, at some point mainstream technology turned on the users. So much modern tech seems to be about exerting control or "monetizing" instead of empowering.
