Tim Cook has been absolutely fantastic for Apple shareholders and absolutely awful for anyone else, particularly the customers.

The walled garden has to end. There is no excuse for making people pay a premium price for an iPad Pro that can't run a third party web browser or do software development in any meaningful way.

Outside of a very narrow use case, the iPad product range is useless, despite the endless rantings of the brainwashed fanboys. Source: used to be one. Left the ecosystem when they started treating the RFCs like toilet paper.

Steve wasn't exactly famous for playing nicely with other tech either.

He signed his name to the "fuck Flash" memo, promised to publish interoperable specs for iMessage/FaceTime and never did, presided over the original App Store launch, etc.

A lot of the balls Tim is rolling were first pushed by Steve.

I tried it because another_linux_distro! Sadly, I found the COSMIC dock looks "dead" since they can not implement the genie effect as it is patented by Apple :///////////

EDIT: I refer to this effect: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/eOrvbaKz5H4

It is called magnification effect.

bsimpson · 3 days ago
The genie effect was from the original X release in like 99. If there's a patent, it should be expired.

But that's a weird line to draw for which shells you find unacceptable.

I hard bounced off COSMIC with the complete lack of theming. I can't even set my clock to a reasonable format in it. The only thing it has going for it is sane multi-monitor support, which neither KDE nor GNOME have gotten right so far (though at KDE there is some activity around it, dunno 'bout GNOME).

I tried a bunch of shells when I got my Legion Go, including COSMIC. It had the worst touchscreen support of any of them.

Now that SteamOS is officially released, I just use KDE. Maybe COSMIC will be better at touch eventually, but since it's a traditional laptop company, I'm not sure.

I’ve been looking for a DisplayPort to HDMI cable to get around this on our household couch gaming computer. I have been unable to find one sketchy or otherwise that can handle high refresh rate and 4:4:4 color.
bsimpson · 4 days ago
FWIW, most USB docks are effectively this. DP goes in via USB-C and HDMI comes out the other end.

I bought one from UGREEN on Amazon. I think it's called the 9 in 1. It does 4k@60 with HDR, coming out of SteamOS.

Just promote DisplayPort and boycott HDMI.

I frequently see comments that say the TV companies are the ones getting the royalties, so I looked it up.

According to Gemini, the royalties go to the _original_ HDMI founders. That includes Sony, Panasonic, Philips, and Toshiba. It does not include Samsung, or LG.

I just realized that the netflix ceo is a big-time democratic party donor, and that paramount is supposedly being supported by larry ellison (big-time republican/trump donor) and saudis? I'm sensing a strong political/influence angle here by the billionaires.

There's no "supposedly."

His kids are nepobabies that each run their own media company. His son is running Paramount, and his daughter has Annapurna.

Paramount sold themselves to Skydance who now get referred to as Paramount because Paramount is the older, stabler brand. That sale is generally considered to have pulled Paramount out of survival mode, though it will probably be at least a few more quarters before it the results are seen.

(Arguably, Skydance's ideas for Paramount are too similar to the weird Paramount and CBS divorce era, that I find it hard to believe Skydance is less wrong of a steward for Paramount than Paramount was before the consolidation. But a lot of that opinion comes from bias as a Star Trek fan and Skydance's approach seems to return to the semi-broken idea that Star Trek seems to be better as a film franchise than a TV franchise.)

Skydance owning both Paramount and Warner Brothers might be very concerning in terms of IP consolidation alone.

Skydance is also known as the then-obscure company that picked up Pixar head John Lasseter when his reputation for being overly affectionate got him pushed out of Disney.

It's one of the Ellison family's forays into media. David's sister/Larry's daughter Megan has Annapurna. Annapurna produced the Spike Jonze's AI romance "Her" and many of the the most prominent indie games of the last decade (Outer Wilds, Cocoon, Stray, Kentucky Route Zero, Sayonara Wild Hearts, Journey, Donut Country…).

Because WB owns what is left of Newline, that would include LotR and The Hobbit.

"What's left"?

New Line has been part of Warner since they merged with TBS in the mid 90s.

the split is hbo+streaming platform on one side and pretty much everything else on the other (discovery, cablechannels, cnn)
bsimpson · 6 days ago
That's conventionally called "studios+streaming" because the Warner Bros studio/brand is one of WBD's crown jewels. The way you've written it, someone could infer everything but HBO Max was going into "other." That's incorrect.

Really conflicted on this one. On the one hand, having to pay for N+1 streaming services because none of my N favourite shows are on any one of them sucks. On the other hand, monopoly.

Netflix stopped being the good(/least bad) guys a while ago.

They've been raising prices relentlessly, banning casting, criminalizing account sharing (which THEY started by introducing profiles)… They're just as selfish and consumer-hostile as most other big companies.
