Look, most of us here know that meta is a terrible company that has done terrible things. But what is actually being done about it? So far just some token fines and petty wrist slaps. What’s really the plan here? Because they’re not going to stop.

Capital is orders of magnitude more powerful than labor. Until that changes, this story will be repeated.

Longer life expectancy has led to stagnation due to those older in power and owning wealth to have reduced risk appetite for investment and innovation, leading to maintaining the status quo and their quality of life for the balance of life remaining. They are stealing from the future through the demand for profits today.

Peter G. Peterson wrote about this in Gray Dawn 25 years ago, Scott Galloway talks about it today.

So that’s where the South Park Epsiode name comes from. Holy cow.

Yeah, I am guessing it's just a placeholder till they get more info. I thought I saw somewhere that internally within Microsoft it's seen as a "Sev 1" with "all hands on deck" - Annoyingly I can't remember where I saw it, so if someone spots it before I do, please credit that person :D

Edit: Typo!

Whoever can recreate this community feeling is going to be rich. Why did people spend so much time in specific phpbb forums? Maybe the problem is that there are too many communities out there now and so people just give up because you're in all of them and you're part of none of them at the same time?
chad_c · 6 months ago
I’m sure an anthropologist can clarify, but once a community reaches a certain size, it seems that emergent properties take over.

If your fencing was done by idiots, then at some point you have no alternative but to start tearing down fences and see what happens. Chesterton's Fence implies either a degree of design or a timeworn quality that most software products don't match.

Chesterton himself was using it as a religious metaphor, and I think most of us agree that software engineers are not literal gods.

chad_c · 9 months ago
It’s not that you can’t tear down the fences. It’s that you studied why they were there in the first place.

99% of the people that reinvent wheels at work don't know how the wheel they don't like is even made and why it has the compromises it has.

I’m reminded of Chesterton’s Fence [1]. I just explained this to a coworker that was proud of indiscriminately eliminating 200+ positions.

I’ve also got an EV and I love it.

I installed solar panels at home and the car is now pretty much completely free to drive during those summer months where I get enough sun to supply my house and the car. I think these panels had an ROI of around 4 years for me, which is crazy good.

chad_c · a year ago
What panels do you have? Do you have energy storage as well?

Agree, but when you staff an entire agency with his supporters, the echo chamber effect can result in it becoming a hive of far-left types.

The same would apply to the right too, except that the right tends to shut down agencies, not create them.

DHS is a counterexample here. It’s huge.

This feels like a weird thing to optimise in most cases - how large are these localisations that deleting them is a benefit?
