As I said the key for hashing PII for telemetry is that the client does the hashing on the client side and the client never transmits the salt. This isn't a login system or similar. There is no "validation" of the hash. All the hash is is a unique marker for a user that doesn't contain any PII.

What's the point in hashing the IP + salt then, just let each client generate a random nonce and use that as the key

Perhaps preceding your list of related links you could state that the following is a list of (recent?) related HN submissions.
sysop073 · 2 years ago
You thought perhaps they commented a list of random unrelated HN submissions?

But this is clearly not "everyone". This is just one/two readers. Not even copiers, as the network does not "remember" the content of the book, at least not better than a casual reader. Infringement in this case is more like standing in a book shop reading the book for free, or loaning one in a library for a day, not actually copying for keeps.

The comment they replied to literally said "Let's take a second to remember that copyright is the reason ~every child doesn't have access to ~every book ever written."

What? No. An ad hominem is "I think your argument is wrong because your face is stupid". "This is bad software because it looks like it's made by amateurs" isn't attacking their character, it's attacking their ability to write good software, which is highly relevant.

what word are people going to use after modern. it's kind of like using the word new. we don't use modern rust around here anymore, just modern new new modern rust.
sysop073 · 3 years ago
A lot of people are getting really hung up on this. "Modern Rust" is just current Rust. Once Rust moves on, that will be modern Rust and what we once called modern will no longer be modern. Like all things. You might as well get upset that somebody said something will happen "tomorrow" because in 24 hours it won't be "tomorrow" anymore.

I don't see anything wrong with that definition.

Can you support all your debt load (mortgage, auto, credit card) for a reasonable period of time ( say a few months ) if you suddenly lose your income this very second?

If not, you are by definition living paycheck to paycheck

sysop073 · 3 years ago
You said you don't see anything wrong with that definition and then provided a completely unrelated definition

Wouldn't most businesses disappear if their partnerships dried up? This is just a weird criticism.
sysop073 · 3 years ago
No? Most businesses sell products or services, their primary source of revenue isn't bribes from a single company. That's pretty rare actually.
