Please note the analogous mechanism on kubernetes ("ephemeral containers") works only with the pod's shareProcessNamespace: true setting, which is usually off. So you won't be able to do this out of the box with your deployment already running on a typical stack
dixie_land · a month ago
this is not true, `kubectl debug` attaches to the namespace of a container of your choosing (`--target` argument). You don't have to enable process namespace sharing at the pod level

Iirc you can also set that "green screen" as wallpaper and have video as desktop background!

From what I've seen, it's because they're trying to reinvent everything because their ideas is that "different". It's like Microsoft full sending on VS Code and Electron, while VLC and Calibre does a better job at being cross platform. VS Code is practically 90% accidental complexity.

We have wayyyyy too many MLEs coming up with these "different" ideas, manipulate AB to show a whooping 1% improvement in (random engagement KPI), get a fat bonus check for the quarter, then rinse and repeat.

I still like the Canadian approach that to have a title with the word Engineer in it you have to be licensed by the engineering regulator for the province you work in. The US way of every software dev, mechanic, hvac installer or plumber is an engineer is ridiculous.
dixie_land · 2 months ago
hey now don't disparage plumbers they are usually certified and licensed, unlike engineers :P

How would an open operating system fix a bug caused by sloppy game developers? I don't think anyone would think "let's not optimize the (equivalent of) critical sections in our operating system so that we don't break GTA", unless you're suggesting providing 100s of different implementations of different parts of the operating system that people can choose from to run a specific game, which I don't think is viable either. Patching individual games is far easier and is actually viable, which is precisely what GOG (Good Old Games) successfully does on a significantly large scale.

You just invented "run in compatibility mode"

This is a welcome change but we can go even further: we should raise the bar for permanent immigration, but eliminate the intermediate steps in between (even green cards).

If you are exceptionally qualified you should just become a citizen (with the responsibilities and pledge of loyalty as a citizen). And we should fast track that for those who qualify (again, on a significantly higher bar)

You... hang out with coyotes in the park? I live near a park with coyotes and all of us are wary of them. The people who walk their dogs frequently carry sticks. As a parent of a 1 yr old and 4 yr old who likes to let them have some degree of age appropriate freedom running around in the park, I can't help but think of the coyotes. Maybe I'm wrong, but they seem like they might be dangerous around people, particularly children.

Maybe it's HN's demographics speaking, but everyone here is talking about their pets, but what about children? Do coyotes not attack kids?

dixie_land · 5 months ago
I think coyotes can get desensitized to humans.

I live in a rather rural area in King county and we have packs of coyote that hunted down a deer one winter, and is generally weary of humans and dogs (the neighborhood has 2+ dog per household on average).

Then the past weekend we played a round of Golf at Newcastle and a pack of coyote pups pop up in broad daylight and one of them lied down to watch us tee off then left when we're done. It was very cute and we had to fight the urge to pet them like puppies

When I went to Shenzhen I found some of these brands with stalls in their vast malls. They're real places. As you walk through you navigate around an obstacle course of dollies, hear endless packing tape and occasionally point out, "oh look, there's Owawuwo, I got a cheap projector from them".

Americans can get a Shenzhen-only 5-day Visa on arrival (VOA) from Hong Kong through the Luohu entry at the LoWu station via the regular MTR. Don't take the HSR, they do not offer it there and you will be turned away. You Must go to the office at Louhu station, it is the only way. It's easy, just take the metro.

Anyways, at LoWu it takes about 45 minutes after doing the paper work. It was very easy. Visa approval for Americans this exact way is estimated to be north of 98%. Exchange your HKD at the government run forex up stairs in the mall after entering China, it's a 1.5% commission, best I've ever seen. Then pay in cash - your Western credit cards Will Not Work. It is a fairly easy day trip - about 45min from Kowloon by rail. The 5-day Visa is a Single Entry.

To go to the trading district take Luobao line (#1) to Huaqianglu (3 stops). It's a 10 minute train trip or a fairly uneventful hour walk if you're up to it. English at the trading district and the border mall is ok. Everywhere else, not so much.

Recommended. The place is absolutely bonkers.

They have this wildly intricate culture of price bargaining. If you're looking to actually buy stuff, you can get amazing deals. But I just went as a tourist.

Chinese denialism over Taiwan is really, really demented. It's not that they just claim Taiwan - they pretend they already own it, and stick their fingers in their ears if you point out facts on the ground.

I suppose they did the same with Mongolia, until they couldn't.

dixie_land · 10 months ago
Funny you mentioned Mongolia. Republic of China (Taiwan) still recognize it as part of its territory (together with mainland China).

It is the communist that ceded a lot of territory to the Soviet Union and the puppet state of Mongolia to appease the USSR by having a buffer between it and china
