I've probably 10 more questions, but you've already shared generously in a couple of other comments. Thanks for that. I've bookmarked, and will investigate. Best of luck with it

very similar in spirit to Olimex Neo6502 https://olimex.wordpress.com/2024/06/25/the-world-fastest-65...

it's a real 6502 assisted by a RP2040

For anyone who wants to challenge themselves to better understand the computers we use every day, I highly recommend the NandToTetris course [0]

I have learnt more about computers in 2 weeks of this course, than years of software development.

Particularly if you are a web-developer, I challenge you to look deeper into PC architectures and low-level programming.

C is a great language to get started with.

After I build this project, I want to move on to a more powerful emulator (maybe a GameBoy or similar, but probably starting at the CPU level rather than the logic gate level!)

I'm waiting on "Code" by Petzold to arrive, which I'm hoping will scratch a similar itch, but this seems like a really great way to do it! The nand2tetris course seems so very great. Emulating it all in C sounds fun.

Search betcode, plenty of us on the slack.

Oh wow, it's happening there! I've followed and starred and bookmarked and all that, and will be having a browse around a bit more closely when I get a moment. I think I'm roughly understanding what the group is about. I'll follow up, thanks!

I worked for almost 27 years, for a company that aligned with my personal morals. The pay was substantially less than what I could have made at less-circumspect outfits, and there was a nonzero amount of really annoying overhead, but I don't regret it, at all. I slept well at night, made good friends, never wrote any software that I regretted, learned heaps of stuff, and helped to develop and launch the careers of a few others.

Mentioning that here, elicits scorn.

Geez, where do I sign up?

Sounds great. Don't listen to the pseudo-realists who chase dreams of grandeur rather than doing something (at least semi-) useful or good with their lives.

I don’t know exactly how these companies make their money and how successful they are, but I at least believe all of them are in the odds computation business. They might be supplying prices to bookmakers instead of betting themselves etc.

Longshot Systems Football Radar Gambit Research SportsRadar Odds Reactor Star Lizard Smartodds Smarkets

These companies are known more for their HFT trading in financial markets, but I believe they have also expanded into sports betting.

jane street jump trading Susquehanna

Also some of the bookmakers such as matchbook have started as betting group and then overtime turned into a bookmaker as that is where the real money is.

Thank you, that's wonderful, I'll be sleuthing there and getting a feel for things. Cheers!

Who do you buy from when they’re all bad. I don’t think buying a Linux laptop is a serious option even for most enthusiasts. The software, hardware, and battery life just aren’t there.

Emacs is "better" only because it has more features at present, and is somewhat more mature.

But emacs remains replete with bugs, the performance leaves a great deal to be desired, the UI locks up if you update your packages because the whole thing is single-threaded, and emacs lisp (the language) quite frankly sucks, a lot.

Lem is not very mature and has a lot of sharp edges but already in this state I can see that it will eclipse emacs if it continues its current trajectory.

Agree with the other responder, largely. I've been bothered a few times by Emacs locking up, but never enough to be actually upset about it. Bugs, I don't see it, it is very very solid for me, I can't remember the last time something didn't work as expected. Hmmm.

Still very Lem-curious, though!
