If you watch the video, the human non-drivers in the car noticed the road debris and could have reacted, but seemed not to because they were waiting for the computer to respond first.

They were testing FSD so I understand why they would do it. It also looked like roadkill and didn't expect it to be a hard obstacle.

I see how the tariff numbers may have been calculated. But why is it done that way? What is the rationale behind such a calculation? Is this a way to balance the existing trade deficits? How does it work?

Would appreciate you (or anybody else) shed some light on the economics of the thing.

saberdancer · 9 months ago
If he used real numbers the tariffs would be so low that it wouldn't make any sense.

Mistake in headline: tge article says 54% rate on China. 34 looks like a typo.
saberdancer · 9 months ago
Apparently it is 34% on top of current 20%, bringing it to a total of 54%.

But who knows with these guys.

This is, as they say, “sanewashing”. Trump is doing this out of a mix of spite and a view of trade as a zero sum game. He may be advised into a path to try to pivot this into a “win” by large scale debt restructuring, but that is not the overarching motive.
saberdancer · 9 months ago
Fully agreed. Tariffs are one thing that Trump has always been clear about. He likes them, he sees them as beneficial and now that he has no brakes in this administration he is finally going to try and put them in place.

There is no 4D chess.

saberdancer commented on B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers Begin Unannounced Deployment to Diego Garcia   theaviationist.com/2025/0... · Posted by u/sorokod

Why would you deploy B-2s outside of the country? Does Diego Garcia even have the required climate controlled hangars to store the planes? Point of these planes was take them off from the US and have them return to the US.

If we're using them for Yemen, wouldn't the b-1b be better and cheaper. Much lower operating costs and almost double the payload?

saberdancer · 9 months ago
It's a big stick to point toward Iran.

Flying from Diego Garcia means they can takeoff without anyone reporting them inbound.

They might have just been much better than dinosaurs at not drowning in bogs and other rare fossil-promoting circumstances.
saberdancer · a year ago
And number of dinosaurs found compared to number of individual dinosaurs that ever lived is staggeringly low.

Surely their should be at least some staging on update files as well, to avoid the "oops, we accidentally blacklisted explorer.exe" type things (or, indeed, this)?
saberdancer · a year ago
Companies have staging and test process but CS bypassed it and deployed to prod.

Yeah, there are tools that do this. I know nothing about this stuff, but a recent Tech Tangents video had him combining multiple degraded prints of Contact. It's the final segment and the tool is called Id-disc-stacker. You need a lot of time, space and processing power.

Speaking of epic scifi, when are we getting a Hyperion movie? I'm just re-reading it now and it would make for an amazing movie with todays special effects.

Or like a single season mini series.

saberdancer · 2 years ago
Strange no one commented but apparently Bradley Cooper (of all people) is working on making it. https://movieweb.com/bradley-cooper-hyperion-movie-epic/

No definite timeline on it.

The way I think of this is: If instead of having a small circle rolling around a larger one, think of a circle with ANY non-zero radius rolling around one with a zero (or really really small) radius. You’ll always end up with at least one rotation, regardless of how small the other circle is. So +1 makes sense.
saberdancer · 2 years ago
The way I thought about it, you have to roll around the larger one and you have to roll around yourself (+1). So if they are two same size circles, it's 1 for the other and 1 for yourself. If the other one has 3 times bigger radius, it is 3 for the bigger one and 1 for yourself. Etc.

Not sure if it is mathematically accurate but it seemed to make sense to me.
