BLKNSLVR commented on Shifts in U.S. Social Media Use, 2020–2024: Decline, Fragmentation, Polarization (2025)   arxiv.org/abs/2510.25417... · Posted by u/vinnyglennon

> Part of me is happy about it. The sooner we get out of the social media landscape, the better the society as a whole will be.. in my opinion anyway. Still, we have already lost so much of the original internet. That loss makes me sad.

While I share the hope, it's probably not going to happen: most folks have moved from FB to use AI chats. Now it's the tool to manipulate opinions and habits. And it's working very well and nuanced. With AI, the society will be more divided, more polarised, and less happy than before.

And there's no way back already! Even if the web search works well one day, the folks desire (and habit!) to outsource thinking is too strong, especially among younger.

The 'younger' only because they're forming habits in the time of AI. Most all humans tend towards minimising cognitive load; the making hard decisions and consideration of complex topics and situations. It's all about the tools that were available to you at the time you started to need those tools. The core is the same. Low-level, essentially sub-conscious, human behaviour change doesn't happen on a noticeable time frame^.

^ my opinion, not based on research. ie. feel free to critique.

What has changed is the awareness of the hacks that work on the human lizard brain, and therefore pandering to all that makes us weak and powerless in exchange for money and convenience. That's the part that makes it feel, for me, more likely that there's no way back. Those hacks will only get more refined and more streamlined into exploitation.

In just about every aspect of life, the race to the bottom seems to be on the last lap, and all the players have that almost-there energy.
BLKNSLVR · a day ago
It certainly feels that Microsoft is accelerating in this race. There have been almost weekly 'a new reason' that Windows 11 sucks and is user hostile. Previously it would be only once a month.

What about "I'm a Linux guy?" I don't pay any company for my Linux OSes. My favorites are nonprofits and mostly interchangeable.

I'm a Linux guy, but I've always had a little bit of FreeBSD on the side.

(I'm also forced to use Windows at work)

Am I the only one who vehemently despised this movie?
BLKNSLVR · 2 days ago
Yes, you are the only one who is wrong ;)

Such a crap, corny movie. Cliché dialogues. Didn't age well, typical 90s techbabblebullshit drivel.

Strange days OTOH...

BLKNSLVR · 2 days ago
Disagree on Hackers, agree on Strange Days.

Skunkanansie cameo too.

Easily my biggest guilty pleasure movie, warts and all, I still love it.

My wife, who isn't into that culture at all, knows how I feel about Hackers.

Every now and then when the opportunistic situation arises, she'll announce at me: "Crash and Burn".

I haven't watched it, but I seem to recall "Mr Robot" was widely praised by techies too.
BLKNSLVR · 2 days ago
Yes, I've watched that TV show through twice and will probably do it again.

Great on the technicals and also a complete mind fuck.

I really loved 'Track Down' (2000), if you want to try. The film depict maybe more 1980-1990 though

In Australia that was titled 'Hackers 2' and was very disappointing - until I learned the backstory and have since read Ghost in the Wires. It's still a totally different thing to Hackers, but it's a good addition to the zeitgeist.

I miss the time when rollerblades seemed like the ideal mode of transport.

My ankles don't.

BLKNSLVR · 2 days ago
I've been inline skating ten years now, and the last three years been doing long outdoor skates, 43km a couple of weeks ago.

It is the ideal move of transport! (if cars were less common and hills less steep).

I've got weak ankles from rolling them regularly playing other sports, but the inline boots strap em in nice and tight.

If you need some motivation, or just like to watch some decent skating, check out The Stuttering Skater on YouTube. I'm nowhere near even thinking about being that good, but he's great to watch weaving through NYC traffic.

In a sense, society sold out
BLKNSLVR · 2 days ago
I feel that statement is still hedging too much.

Society sold out.
