I have a strong aversion to comments like this, because they come across as extremely generic. Are you really very knowledgeable about the Dutch justice system, that being where Philips is headquartered? Philips are gonna lose at least $400m from this: what makes you so certain that the justice system is "completely broken", or that manslaughter charges are what they deserve? Have you compared the justice system with, let's say, Russian justice or Zimbabwean justice? I think the latter are a great deal more broken.

Casual cynicism is as foolish as casual naivety, and more toxic and dangerous.

rshaban commented on Tell HN: Trello Hacked?    · Posted by u/sergiomattei

Yes, surprisingly, there is no other news source that I've found as yet. Worth noting, in the email from HIBP, they include the following full information: "Breach: Trello Date of breach: 16 Jan 2024 Number of accounts: 15,111,945 Compromised data: Email addresses, Names, Usernames Description: In January 2024, data was scraped from Trello and posted for sale on a popular hacking forum. Containing over 15M email addresses, names and usernames, the data was obtained by enumerating a publicly accessible resource using email addresses from previous breach corpuses. Trello advised that no unauthorised access had occurred."

Interestingly if you read the actual report from HRW, it sounds like most of the material they are referring too was legitimately taken down because it supported violence, according to Meta's policies.

For example, the phrase "from the river to the see" is considered hateful by many, so it was taken down. In other cases the content praised attacks by Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the US government.

From HRWs descriptions it sounds like the bulk of the "1049" content removals were clear violations of Meta's policies against support for violence.

Regardless of whether you agree, these don't seem surprising to me on light of Meta's own rules. There are of course a small number of exceptions listed.

"Supported violence" is a wild thing to ... // Compare; at some point, I began to receive an almost unrelenting stream of advertisements for weapons, body armor, etc. Tanks, even. Crazy things. SO much violence is advertised on "Meta"; it's only... """ a specific kind of violence """ that seems to be prohibited, by Meta, namely anti-Israeli violence.

Probably not noteworthy enough for historical records, but living under Dhimmi is not exactly tension free.

Dhimmi also means "protected" but you may ask protected from what?

Hi! I love it. The magic of original HTML inspired my current website : http://razi.ps

I remember the days as a kid when I just threw together CSS and HTML to see how things worked. Playing with the edges of Unicode/ASCII web-host-shittification made for a creative playground ..

Yet another etymological curiosity:

hǫfn is "old norse" for harbour or port. Now going to wiktionary and following the etymology:

hǫfn: From Proto-Germanic *habanō, *habnō (“harbour, haven”).

habanō: From Proto-Indo-European *kh₂póneh₂ or *kh₂pnéh₂, from the root *keh₂p- (“to take, seize, grasp”).

Other germanic words (like german "Hafen") for harbour/port also have a very similar lineage and derive from this "to take, seize, grasp".

So basically the harbour is the place you go to, when you are going "to take, seize, grasp", like when you invade other countries by sea.*

rshaban commented on Tech layoffs are feeding a new startup surge   wired.com/story/tech-layo... · Posted by u/dev_tty01

How does someone currently unemployed by choice with a good financial cushion take advantage of this if I don't have any startup ideas I'm deeply passionate about? I've kept an eye on the startup market and all I see are exceedingly boring ideas with mind numbing pitches around them. "Democratizing shipping!" "Disrupting the collaborative saas text editor market!"

Edit: wow the ideas in OP are dumb as hell too.

Imperative: modifying state is the point of a bit-flipping machine; get out of my way so I can have fun!

OOP: OK, I mostly had enough fun, can we try to tame the bit-flipping chaos with real-world analogies, without deflating all the fun?

Functional: Any Monad is by definition an Endofunctor, which also means it's an object in the category of Endofunctors, where the monadic μ(flatMap) and η(unit) operators satisfy the definition of a Monoid in that particular Monoidal Category. You got that?

Declarative: I'm gonna need a corner office with a view, and $200K/y.

Hi, if you want to chat, please send me a dm or email. I dn't think you're an outlier but rather perhaps an activated human who hasn't received the kind of support they might need to make use of their "abilities" and is perhaps an overwhelmed "empath" to use a modern jargon. If you've interest in sharing what your internal experience was – outside of the judgment/shame filter that "I'm not like everybody else" then I'd be happy to hear it – with love,
