Germany does not use a global unique identifier like the social security number in the US. The Germans do not like such global identifier for people because the the Nazis used them and data protection is very important in Germany.
r3drock · 3 years ago
This is in fact not correct. There are two unique identifiers for every german citizen, first the so called "Rentenversicherungsnummer" and the "Steueridentifikationsnummer". Both are assigned at birth.

Wait, how could exercise not lead to weight loss? Given that you eat the same amount of calories, exercising will lead to a lower overall calorie count, and building muscle will lead to a higher metabolic rate.

Wut?

r3drock · 4 years ago
You could get hungrier because of the exercise and therefore eat more, which would prevent weight loss.

Sounds like a self solving problem.

I reckon people will start caring about their despots if they expect to live a millennium under the despots' boot

r3drock · 4 years ago
I would not be so sure about that.

If you were expecting to live a much longer life, people might grow more fearful about the consequences of speaking up against a dictator.

I'm confused how a still significant net issuance of new treasuries constitutes QT. I'm sure it's me missing something but I don't know what I'm missing.
r3drock · 4 years ago
Consider this example: The Fed has issued $2 worth of treasuries in the past, which mature today. If the Fed then issues only $1 of new treasuries today, the overall amount of treasuries in circulation shrinks.

> Former Chancellor Gerhard Schroder oversaw the shutdown of Germany's nukes.

This is incorrect.

Germany decided to phase out nuclear power after the Fukushima desaster. This was well into Merkels's chancellorship, and there are still nuclear power plants.

r3drock · 4 years ago
Not really incorrect. Both are in a way correct. In 2002 the nuclear power phase-out was written into law. With Merkel in 2010 there was a decision to keep the power plants running for far longer. This extension was retreated because of the Fukushima desaster.

I find it eternally confusing how the narrative is "this change is because of climate change" and not "this change is because we are running out of oil".

Oil hasn't been consistently cheap since 2003, it is only going to get more expensive. We've consistently been using more of the stuff than gets discovered since the 1980s. There is only one way the story ends.

r3drock · 4 years ago
Oil might last a lot longer than you think at first. Even at the proven oil reserves of 2016 the oil would last for 47 years (https://www.worldometers.info/oil/). Additionally, new reserves could be found. Another potentially very large source of oil is coal. You can make oil from coal via the Fischer-Tropsch technology. As there already are considerably more proven coal reserves than oil reserves, this would probably push out the point of "no oil left" a lot further.

I ride my personal scooter at 0~40 mph in the road and in the bike lanes.

When I see for-rent scooters dumped blocking public commons, I stop and throw them in the nearest gutter, dumpster, sewer, or river to hold the companies responsible for their users monetarily.

If I see a pizza-delivery robot going 5 mph in a bike lane, I'm going to kick it to the curb or run-over it. And, I'll make sure everyone else does the same. They can pay bike messengers who need the work rather than being job-stealing, pointless automation assholes.

r3drock · 5 years ago
I am curious about your rationale of throwing scooters in the river. Are you not aware that the batteries will leak and pollute the river?

> Many non-US countries have little/no credit card presence

Was that statement accidental horrible wording or did you actually mean it ?

If the latter, then you must be one of those many Americans that needs to travel more. The rest of the world are not neanderthals who've never heard of credit cards.

Go to Kenya (Africa) and the only reason you might struggle to pay by credit card is if the merchant has decided to prefer payments via the M-PESA money transfer phone app instead which is what most of the locals use. So you could say a number of non-US countries are even ahead of the US !

But of course I hope your wording was accidental, in which case I apologise for the three paragraphs above. ;-)

r3drock · 5 years ago
In Germany for example, a lot of people have no credit card.
