I think it makes sense to do an ASIC later, but not now. Chip development is expensive and risky. They ought to at least start selling a product with positive gross margin first.
pm90 · 5 days ago
Its possible that they have tried that and the market isn’t giving them what they need at the price they want. I do mostly agree with you though; its the economics of the car thats gonna supercharge adoption.

EDIT: another commenter mentioned that their platform is used by other companies (VW perhaps?). With that information, it might make more sense to do this.

is it good or bad for confluent employees?

IPO'd at 45, high of 90ish, sold at 30. It depends on the strike price for employees, but its not clear if its universally a good outcome.

I felt like he avoided saying anything negative about Intel just in case it would be taken that way. Intel doesn’t have the best reputation so we are all interpolating a much more negative message than he actually said.
pm90 · 10 days ago
Agreed. He also mentioned these years being “some of the toughest at intel”. To me it read as 1) Amazing that he managed to get anything done at all with this kind of turmoil and 2) A not so subtle hint that things aren’t all good at Intel.

Damned is this industry, when even _you_ say you have to show that "remoteness works".

I also measure meetings (counts, lengths, and mostly meeting minutes/outine jotted down by myself) and keep track of other metrics, exactly for this reason. However, I also don't happen to have written best selling books and stuff, so I really must do this, and you really shouldn't have to :-)

I have more respect for him because he chose to do this. It’s probably clear that he doesn’t have to, at all. But he’s choosing not to rely on his (somewhat) tech celebrity status and deliver on measurable outcomes.

No since the underlying H-1B petition was filed and approved before this $100K payment provision went into effect.

hey peter, Im on an h1b visa (year 10, have approved i140 and pending gc application). Ive never done an h1b stamping as I was paranoid about being denied. Will doing the stamping now trigger the 100k h1b fee?

This is not good. One major outage? Something exceptional. Several outages in a short time? As someone thats worked in operations, I have empathy; there are so many “temp havks” that are put in place for incidents. but the rest of the world won’t… they’re gonna suffer a massive reputation loss if this goes on as long as the last one.
pm90 commented on Thoughts on Go vs. Rust vs. Zig   sinclairtarget.com/blog/2... · Posted by u/yurivish

I still don’t get the point of zig, at least not from this post? I really don’t want to do memory management manually. I actually think rust is pretty well designed, but allows you to write very complex code. go tries really hard to keep it simple but at the cost of resisting modern features.

The question is what reason did you have to trust SaaS Company X in the first place?
pm90 · 13 days ago
SaaS is now a "solved problem"; almost all vendors will try to get SOX/SOC2 compliance (and more for sensitive workloads). Although... its hard to see how these certifications would have prevented something like this .

It’s interesting bc I still see mid level (7 yoe) developers getting jobs with no issues. Lots of dispersion of difficulty depending on speciality as well
pm90 · 16 days ago
Yes, smaller firms and startups are still hiring aggressively.
