Here is a novel idea. Just pronounce ECMA as a 2 syllable word using classical Latin pronunciation. Ecma becomes just as catchy as Java when pronounced that way. For English speakers who do not know classical Latin, just read this:

Eck-Ma-Script

Here is Eck for those who do not know:

https://youtu.be/cqsDlZAK104

As for Ma, it is the second half of mama. That is actually /ɛkmɑskɹɪpt/ rather than /ekmaskɹɪpt/, but it is close enough.

I was under the impression that this was the pronounciation that sounded like a skin disease.

There are advantages to diversity by itself. These have been well documented. So setting aside any concern about excluded groups, it was a good business decision to aim for a diverse workforce.

But taking those concerns up again, almost no one perceives their own biases as biases. It's like you don't perceive your own accent, people of different racial backgrounds look similar, you can't smell your own breath, etc. So being a biased person feels just like being an unbiased person, but it makes you make biased decisions. A person against whom you harbor a prejudice applies for a job. Your bias causes you to discount their better qualities and double count their worse qualities. So you hire someone else. This hurts both you and the person you didn't hire.

A policy that works against well-known biases, if implemented correctly, achieves three ends: it reduces the harm to the person biased against, it reduces the harm to the company whose hiring policies are distorted by bias, and it helps the company by producing a more diverse workforce, which is an end in itself regardless of whether you care about harms to others. If implemented correctly, diversity hiring targets can produce the effect of hiring without prejudice despite the prejudice of those hiring.

If you are crossing a river and the wind blows you off course, you don't head to your goal but to the side. The net result is that you reach your goal. The diversity targets are just tacking against the wind.

>There are advantages to diversity by itself. These have been well documented. So setting aside any concern about excluded groups, it was a good business decision to aim for a diverse workforce.

They wanted to have a diverse workforce, and came up with an excuse for it post-hoc. The best defense I've seen of this is that diverse opinions are good for business. Of course, hiring racially diverse people while being antagonistic towards those with different ways of thinking does little to increase diversity of thought.

>But taking those concerns up again, almost no one perceives their own biases as biases.

Says the pot to the kettle. The way to prevent bias is to come up with objective factors to evaluate people based on, not intentionally injecting bias of your own.

>If you are crossing a river and the wind blows you off course, you don't head to your goal but to the side. The net result is that you reach your goal. The diversity targets are just tacking against the wind.

We have a word for this: racism.

> Starting on January 19, 2025 Facebook's internal policy makers decided that Linux is malware and labelled groups associated with Linux as being "cybersecurity threats".

That's quite the statement to make without any source to back it up; I wonder what the evidence for this is.

lofenfew · a year ago
They are the source. A journo could write an article and mention distrowatch as where they got their information from. If you don't trust them - great, you can do your own research.

> I wonder what the evidence for it is

Maybe "Any posts mentioning DistroWatch and multiple groups associated with Linux and Linux discussions have either been shut down or had many of their posts removed" and "We've been hearing all week from readers who say they can no longer post about Linux on Facebook or share links to DistroWatch. Some people have reported their accounts have been locked or limited for posting about Linux"

What do you think evidence consists of if not that?

I'm wondering how you would know when the yellow light was going to come on.

Do you have some sort of countdown, or innate knowledge?

Because, otherwise do you just randomly stop at green lights guessing that a yellow light might come on? Or do you drive so slowly that you can stop in the width of the white line before a pedestrian crossing? Really, I'm trying to figure out how you don't ever enter just as a light turns yellow. Once you do, do you stop in the intersection or try to clear it before it turns red? I hope the latter.

For me yellow lights are a warning that a red light is coming. It should be long enough for cars to clear the intersection (in many states without gridlock rules even this is not the case for left hand turns).

My experience in Boston is that drivers try to beat the green light change and accelerate while it's still red.

often, in the form of the pedestrian signal.

> try to clear it before it turns red?

This is the rule in much of the world, yes.

ethnic canadians are still about 5% of the population, if you can believe it.

Minor drug offences could also fit that though — possession or even someone dealing weed mightn't be directly involved in any violence at all

Or petty theft, shoplifting etc.

That PR is great. Not only do they get rid of TypeScript, they get rid of prettier and some gratuitous trailing commas. https://github.com/hotwired/turbo/pull/971/files#diff-865b8f...

I’m not joking. I prefer the after.

Edit: thanks. Yes, commas, not comments.

"a. the vast majority of people are neither addicted to porn nor lacking in ability to form relationships. if that has happened to some people they are a minority"

Hmm... something is going on though: https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/sexual-intelligence/...

Which in turn is going to likely lead to even further reductions in birth rate.

I think we need to be careful about all the things that factor into our sub-replacement birthrates.

lofenfew · a year ago
I don't think we should be attempting to force parenthood on children in order to solve birthrates. Maybe you should have to show proof of being a child to access porn? Might work.

b. pornhub has no monopoly over the internet porn industry. insofar as those men did get so addicted, that would have happened regardless of pornhub existing.

Surely the title is misleading in that Pornhub is the entity blocking those states from accessing it, as they choose to not follow the new law. As-is it reads like the states are the ones blocking it, which they are not. They're simply asking for more than an "I promise I'm 18" button.
lofenfew · a year ago
The phrasing doesn't necessarily imply that pornhub isn't the entity blocking it, but it does leave it for the reader to interpret according to their biases. Also, one might argue that the legislation in being overly onerous is in fact what is causing the block, and hence implying that the states themselves are blocking pornhub is at least partially correcy.
