Lying to a court is usually pretty serious. Any sensible legal department will tell you never to do that, whatever your CEO says.

Usually.

But today you just have a private dinner with the president and he'll wave it away.

The problem with GrapheneOS as a way to protest what Google is doing with Android is that you have to buy a Google Android device to be able to use it. Buying a Google device to be able to protest what Google is doing with their Google devices seems counter productive.

I don't know how good /e/OS is, but at least there is a place to get it factory loaded on cell phones and install it on phone brands other than Google.

And then there is Lineage OS, which I've had good luck using the extend the life of phones in the past. I haven't tried it since Play Integrity started being such an important feature, but I suppose that just pushes one to be even more open source on their Lineage device. I've been wanting to try Lineage again, but I misplaced the phone I want to try it on.

GrapheneOS is luckily working with another OEM but that's still 1-2 years away.

Buying a phone from Google is hardly ideal, but the effect is limited by the earnings being nothing but a blip in the grand scheme of things. Having an alternative OS is important enough to offset it IMO.

It's mainly the lack of emergency services support in my country. Every time I called the operator can't see where I am through GPS, first question asked was what state im in.
lawn · a day ago
That might be because GrapheneOS by default scrambles your GPS location but I think you should be able to turn that off?

Interesting. Does this mean that it is using a lower level of Play Integrity API checking (ie not hardware attestation), or are they using the open hardware attestation API (which... exists but is almost never used)?

I have no idea, but I've never gotten the "this app is using Play Integrity" warning with BankID so maybe it doesn't use Play Integrity?

Really? I never even installed the play store because it didn’t work on LineageOS.

I guess I absolutely need the play store to get BankID on the phone- so I’ll try that now with my Pixel 7.

lawn · a day ago
Yes.

The only issue I had on GrapheneOS was that I had to play with the location permissions a bit when I wanted to copy the BankID to GrapheneOS from another phone (I've got some pictures of that in this blog post: https://www.jonashietala.se/blog/2025/08/28/ill_only_buy_dev...).

All other Swedish bank accounts I've tried have also worked great (including Swish).

In Sweden we use BankID (there is a similar service with the same name in each Scandinavian country).

It's impossibly convenient to be perfectly fair with you, however I know that my bank has stopped issuing the "BankID Card" (which was a card and pin device that allowed you to generate challenge numbers)- and now forces you to use the BankID app -- which will not run on rooted phones of course.

It's even slightly worse as the App requires NFC; so I can't keep a backup on my iPad (which is what I was doing before).

BankID works great on GrapheneOS fortunately.

> Python is not my favorite programming language. In fact, allow me to drop the euphemism and express my pure, unadulterated thoughts about it: I never liked Python, I see it as a huge red flag and I think the world would be a better place if we all decided to finally move on from it.

Why do people make hating a tool their entire personality? I have noticed this same thing with languages like Go ("oh no Go still bad") and C++. I don't like C++ myself but I don't hate it. It would be like hating a screwdriver.

If you don't like a language simply don't use it, there are hundreds of alternatives. If your employer is making you write in that language you should hate your employer, not the language.

Humans have a very strong tendency to identify with certain groups (while distancing from other groups).

This is just one such example and it's similar to how group dynamics with sport teams and politics work.

As someone coming from Ruby to TypeScript, I find types cumbersome, verbose, complex, and not of much use. I have been writing and reading TS for the past six months. What am I missing?
lawn · 3 days ago
Types in TS can indeed become very complex (depending on their usage of course) and it might not be the best example of the benefits.

I personally think that simpler Rust is a better example of the benefits static typing (or maybe something like Gleam).
