If apple came out with their own linux distro, with open drivers and a mainline kernel... A girl can dream!
kylec · 3 days ago
I feel like Apple wouldn't want to make full Linux work on their hardware, but they could enable their Darwin kernel to emulate Linux syscalls and provide a way to boot into a mode that basically loads the kernel and whatever Linux shell you want

I've been holding back to find a suitable machine for a bit of XCode development, web browsing and mail, and I'm pretty close to concluding this'd be good enough, but I'm pretty sure I'd be better off with something heftier, since I mostly just want to develop JUCE stuff on MacOS .. anyone got opinions on this so far? How does the A18 versus Mx architecture factor into things, will we need to write slightly different code for each, or can we write ARM assembly that will be fine in both environments?
kylec · 8 days ago
I'm going to echo what others have said, Xcode will run on 8GB but the moment you need simulators or iOS canvas previews it will need more memory. You can probably get by on the Neo, but it won't be ideal. I suggest an M4 Mac mini instead.

$5000 laptop you have to pay to add a power adapter… gratuitous penny pinching from Tim Cook's Apple.

It's one of those things, yes if I'm spending that much on a laptop I can afford to spend $80 on the adapter too, but does it feel good as a customer to do that or are you souring the experience of buying from you just to earn a few more dollars.

kylec · 11 days ago
I'm assuming you're in the EU or UK, Apple is required by law to not include a power adapter:

In the US they provide one in the box free of charge.

I typed “RAM” to search for it and boy they hammer home how lucky I am to be getting 1TB SSD standard, but no mention of RAM anywhere on this page. Anyway, the MacBook Pro starts with 16GB of RAM. It’s $400 to go from 16GB to 32GB.

Interestingly, 36-128GB models are showing as “currently unavailable” on the store page, and you can’t even place an order for them right now? But for anyone curious, it’s quoting $5099 for the 128GB RAM 14” MacBook Pro model.

Apple doesn't tend to use "RAM" in their marketing materials, they usually use "memory", which appears 9 times in the press release.

I wonder if a similar system is in place at McDonald's because they never fail to ask if I'm using the app, it's pretty annoying

Huge win on the name change. I'm never going to install an app called Pingstalker on my computer, it would feel gross and I'd worry other people might see it and be alarmed by it.

Famously Steve Jobs said that the (personal) computer is "like a bicycle for the mind". It's a great metaphor because- besides the idea of lightness and freedom it communicates- it also described the computer as multiplier of the human strength- the bicycle allows one to travel faster and with much less effort, it's true, but ultimately the source of its power is still entirely in the muscles of the cyclist- you don't get out of it anything that you didn't put yourself.

Bu the feeling I'm having with LLMs is that we've entered the age of fossil-fuel engines: something that moves on its own power and produces somewhat more than the user needs to put into it. Ok, in the current version it might not go very far and needs to be pushed now and then, but the total energy output is greater than what users need to put in. We could call it a horse, except that this is artificial: it's a tractor. And in the last months I've been feeling like someone who spent years pushing a plough in the fields, and has suddenly received a tractor. A primitive model, still imperfect, but already working.

kylec · 2 months ago
A tractor does exactly what you tell it to do though - you turn it on, steer it in a direction, and it goes. I like the horse metaphor for AI better: still useful, but sometimes unpredictable, and needs constant supervision.

Try running anything interesting on these 8gb of ram.

You need 96gb or 128gb to do non trivial things. That is not yet 749 usd

kylec · 3 months ago
The M4 starts with 16GB, though that can also be tight for local LLMs. You can get one with 24GB for $1149 right now though, which is good value.

Don't these all use the same crappy internals, because there's only one company left making those, to satisfy the remaining hipster crowd?
