kerbobotat commented on Gravity batteries try to beat chemical ones with winches, weights, mine shafts   sciencemag.org/news/2021/... · Posted by u/hheikinh

Does it need to expend the energy to winch it up? Would it not be simpler to have a set of these weights, and a ramp system to deliver them to the top, and use vehicles to unload at the base and drive them back to the top to be hooked up again in sequence? Surely there would be less energy loss moving it up a ramp than fighting gravity in a vertical shaft to winch it directly upwards.
kerbobotat commented on How to Read Books When You Have ADHD   untappedbrilliance.com/ho... · Posted by u/shankarro

No. ADHD does not work this way for me, or people like me who are inattentive . This article is the equivalent of the time my primary care physician said, “just use a calendar”. You want me to maintain a set of documents? Buddy, without meds I can’t remember to brush my fucking teeth. I’m not exaggerating. ADHD is a spectrum, articles like this paint everyone with the same brush, which furthers many people to feel like complete failures.

Exactly right, and also, thank you for reminding me I forgot to brush my teeth.

I was looking for the mention of Dwarf Fortress - it appears to implement much of what he's describing in the story simulations of Worldgen.
kerbobotat · 5 years ago
Dwarf Fortress' creator Tarn Adams is the antithesis of this guy, as far as I can see from a brief perusal of his articles beyond this one. Tarn is humble, often plays down his acheivements, is really interested in how his players and community interact with the systems, and builds out complexity based on the desires and needs of the players.

I don't mean to diminish the work of Crawford, but he is building the same kind of simulationst mechanisms that Adams is, but Adams hit on success partly because of his personality.

No Russendisko unfortunately, but I guess that's German and not technically Easter-European.

That film is my white-whale, Ive searched high and low for a copy of it with english subtitles since I saw the trailer back in 2011 or 2012. Mainly I just want to see it because I'm a fan of the band Leningrad and they did some of the soundtrack.

kerbobotat commented on The wrong kind of trees: Ireland's afforestation meets resistance   theguardian.com/world/201... · Posted by u/f_allwein

Let me get this right: Ireland was deforested. Now its a big carbon offender. Trees improve that drastically. So they planted trees, lots of trees, 11% of Ireland now covered by trees (up from 1%).

But, get this, they're not pleasant to walk through! They're the wrong color. They are 'dark and dank'.

Hm. Compared to what? The stripped, blasted landscape they replaced? The ecological disaster that was remediated?

This seems a trivial, silly article.

kerbobotat · 6 years ago
The ecological disaster is that these kinds of forest are green dead zones. no other native plantlife can survivie in this ecosystem, if you can even call it that. Silka Pine should be considered an invasive species, IMO.

I listen to music all day while working that frequently triggers frisson. However, I cannot stand ASMR, especially bodily noises including mouth stuff like talking and lip smacking. That might just be Misophonia (TIL) though.
kerbobotat · 6 years ago
I am the same. I have an irrational hatred of those wet-mouth whisper videos, it makes my skin crawl but not in the same way as this article describes.

The overall feeling is often called "frisson", and some people describe it as the feeling when you're on a swingset and it hits its peak and starts to come back down. I get literal goosebumps from some music, and some movies too, but that's probably just triggered by the soundtrack. Blade Runner 2049 and Annihilation always do it even though I've seen them almost a dozen times each.
kerbobotat · 6 years ago
The sound of The Shimmer from the trailer and in the movie (See here https://youtu.be/89OP78l9oF0?t=54) makes my skin shiver every time I hear it. Also I loved Annihilation both in book and movie form. Have you seen its spiritual predecessor, Roadside Picnic?
