Cool technology, but what is the usecase? I can imagine traveling abroad without a sim and using it as described. But is it any better than using the cellular network (when you have access to it)?
kaiken1987 · 2 months ago
Cardo uses a similar tech for a dynamic mesh network, using Bluetooth I think, in their helmet comms. So if you are out on motorcycles or ATVs you can still talk without needing a cellular network. It makes things a lot more stable and not use any data. In these scenarios you'd struggle to talk face to face wearing helmets without some sort of comm. So if you can remove the need to buy a specialized comm device to do it, sounds great.

This lets you use the desktop application and a phone at the same time, which I use.

It doesn't allow you to use multiple phones at the same time.

kaiken1987 · 5 months ago
It's something I've just recently run into trying to set it up on an Android tablet. The funny thing is they allow it on an iPad. It'd be great if they allowed just any phone or tablet to link to the primary device. I'd complain but it's been deaf ears for the last 4 years to get them to put gifs back into the desktop app.

It goes deeper than that! According to wikipedia, the tentacles, or appendages, are indeed called "arms", but they evolved from what in other molluscs is called a "foot"!
kaiken1987 · a year ago
Deeper still, one of those arms on males contains their sexual organs call the hectocotylus.

Knew I recognized this. "This project has no meaningful contribution to society" lol. Wait until they see my github.

But really great job so far.

I'm in that first group and I don't see how it makes the most sense. They are not more convenient. I can "charge" my gas car in 2 minutes basically anywhere in the country.

I'm going on vacation next week, driving with 2 young children. It'll be about a 11 hour drive which is not crazy for a US vacation. I don't want to plan where I stop and stop for 45 minutes to fuel up with 2 toddlers in the car.

And they're all much more expensive than a nice 5 year old gas car.

kaiken1987 · 2 years ago
Realistically having done road trips, it's stopping every 3 hours and it's not 45 minutes, it's basically the amount of time it takes to get 2 kids out of the car, in to use the restrooms, and back into the car.

My puzzle word has four vowels. My two guesses each four vowels, but not the same four (e.g. "AAIO" and "AEIO"), and I got four vowel matches for each guess. I know how that result can pop out of a particular way of scoring, but it's not what I expect from a word guessing game.

Yeah that really messed with me OOA and OAA shouldn't count the same imo, but at bare minimum if it's a feature not a bug it should be noted in the How to Play

The aha moment for me was realizing there's a set of scammers who scam other scammers by selling them the ability to scam marks.

It's why so many spam campaigns are completely broken (no link, nothing to even possibly send anyone any money) because the money was made when the spam gun was sold to someone, and they have no idea how to use it.

Speak for yourself. There are many great niche communities from which I have derived pretty tremendous value. The front page is generally worthless and toxic, yes, but that doesn't condemn the entire site.

kaiken1987 · 2 years ago
Yeah I think that's something a lot of people miss because they never create accounts or only sub to the defaults. If you are in the subs with a million people then yeah they are typically pretty bad. But when you get into small niche hobby subreddits they are usually pretty great, with people who are there because they love the hobby and want others to enjoy it. As well with good advice for beginners. And what a lot of the alternatives are missing is those people. It's what makes it thrive or wither on the vine.
