it's "hear, hear". The expression Comes from the English Parliament back in the 17th century.

Now the really puzzling question is: How would someone learn about this particular saying without seeing it in writing? Are there actually people still using "hear hear" in everyday speech?

commute by bike. 3 hours in the car every day is brutal.

Yeah, this seems odd to me, considering that a reasonably successful software engineer can afford to live pretty much anywhere.

Not in the Bay Area. Every developer or ops person I know either has roommates or has a similar 1.5-hour commute.

"Only" 90k.

Don't worry, 75% will go to the cost of the privilege of living in the bay area.

> the average salary for a senior software engineer in the United States is right around $100K not $250k like it is at Google, etc.

Bay Area HNers would be wise to remember this line. The number of times I see comments stating that it's easy or typical to make $175-200k/yr just a few years out of school is far too high.

In the bay area the average for juniors is only 90k, and most people cap out at 120k or so, unless they have top-tier degrees, incredible negotiating skills, or something.

Fact: IRC doen't persist chat messages on the server, so to view old messages you need to install a bot that provides you with the last n messages... and you have to manually query the bot for them. No thanks. Have you people heard of this thing called "mobile"? Spotty connections are the new normal. Having the last N messages autoloaded when I view a channel is a necessity.

As a climate change believer, I'm getting worried that a lot of svientists out there are just telling us all what we want to hear. It's incredibly fun to tell people that the world is going to end in 20 tears due to climate change, but if the truth is that it's end in 500 years, then doctoring the facts to make things seem more dire is dangerous.
