I hope registering an entire domain name for a blog post doesn't become a trend. I like linking to things that are likely to last a long time - a personal blog is one thing, but expecting people to keep paying the renewal fee every year for a single article feels less likely to me.

A good alternative here is subdomains, since those don't have an additional annual fee. https://logging-sucks.boristane.com/ could work well here.

The domain and article just a long-form advert for the author's observability sass. Oddly it's free, but you have to sign up for Cloudlfare, where the author is currently employed.

It's seems they are playing the long-long game!

All snarkiness aside, I learned a few things from the article. And I might even sign up to the sass since I already have a CF account.

I've had dogs for the better part of my life and not a single time was a 'foxtail' an issue, whereas grasses that grow these kind of constructs are pretty common around here. Did I (and my dogs!) get lucky? How common are these issues?
jspash · 20 days ago
I have a tiny long-haired dog (the first dog I've ever had) and I'm glad our first trainer/behaviourist mentioned the dangers of foxtails to us. We casually asked the vet if it was a problem and she said they see around 2-3 animals a week with issues caused by foxtails during the late summer/early autumn months. This is in the Southern UK. It's been getting drier and drier every year. And subsequently more and more foxtails seem to be appearing.

The main issue we've found is she gets them stuck under her "armpits" and under the tail. Places that make them very difficult to find. Even more insidious is when they embed themselves in the harness, only to make an appearance weeks or months later when the outdoor foxtails have mostly been cut down.

The problem is that they can work their way under the skin with a barbed spike that is one-way only. So if they get deep enough the only remedy is to cut the skin with a scalpel - by the vet of course.

Interesting!

For me it says 1 in 17,179,869,184+, but scrolling through all the variables, the vast majority should be the same for any MacBook Chrome user.

It would be great to see the stats of each individual characteristic.

I would love to be able to toggle an attribute off/on to see what affect each has on the uniqueness of my fingerprint. My guess is that there are a handful of _very_ unique things, that if obscured, would make one less recognisable.

Yeah there's a 'delve' there but it almost feels it was put in as a taunt.

I never quite understood this “tell”. I use the word all the time. As do a lot of the people I have know. Written and spoken.

Is this maybe an American thing? Ie it’s just not used much there?

Is there a word for that feeling of relief when someone else fucked up after initially thinking it was you?

The problem is, I still get the wrong end of the stick when AWS or CF go down! Management doesn't care, understandably. They just want the money to keep coming in. It's hard to convince them that this is a pretty big problem. The only thing that will calm them down a bit is to tell them Twitter is also down. If that doesn't get them, I say ChatGPT is also down. Now NOBODY will get any work done! lol.

I use my lastname [at] gmail (same as my HN username). Over the years, I’ve received all sorts of misdirected messages: medical, financial, support, even real estate documents. When it seems important, I do my best to contact the sender and let them know.

What I’ve learned is that “no-reply” email addresses can cause real harm in situations where it’s critical to reach an actual person.

I have lastname.firstname@gmail.com because first.last was already taken.

Just curious, do gmail accounts ever expire? Will I ever get the chance to snag the other one? Or does it forever belong to my nemesis and life-long enemy?

What really annoys me is the variance in corner radius now. Because some apps have released an upgrade and others haven't.

This is kind of the problem. People parrot this stuff with no further investigation.

So that's the new default for Rails? Seems like a new way for people to shot themselves in foot, for those who are used to the usual postgres + separate services setup. Especially that it's advertised as simpler and therefore is tempting to try out without considering such edge cases. I mean, it's the usual route (from my experience) for successful Rails apps to scale horizontally
jspash · 3 months ago
What's new is that it's now being recommended for use in production, not just development. It's also now what they want you to use for caching, artifact storage and just about everything else that use to use "Technology X".

I can see the reasoning behind it. Simplicity. But I'm waiting for the horror stories like this one to die down before making a final judgement. It just doesn't _feel_ right to me after doing it differently for 20+ years.

Reservoirs are nice, aren't they? Nice to look at, swim in, kayak on, walk around etc. Unless your house is going to be flooded, of course.
jspash · 3 months ago
Agreed! I have a few around me, and to be honest I didn't even realise they were there for a few years until I really started exploring the area on foot. They are lovely.

So I don't know what the objections were about. You can easily ignore them, and just as easily enjoy them. But they are hardly going to "destroy the environment".

That said, they would of course destroy "some" environment. I'm not aware of the specific objections in this case. So I'll leave an open mind until I do.
