-10ms, no redundant clocks, and they're leaving most of the servers up with that amount of skew. Wow. I am astonished that NIST does not have multiple clocks over multiple distributed sites with robust ability to detect and bypass individual failures.

> I am astonished that NIST does not have multiple clocks over multiple distributed sites with robust ability to detect and bypass individual failures.

Is this sarcasm? I can't tell.

Per the email:

> Servers at the Boulder and WWV/Ft. Collins campuses are independent and unaffected.

Why does everybody I see complaining about modern Twitter say the exact phrase "Nobody should be on that platform."? I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with your point, just curious if there was some manifesto going around or if everybody suddenly started using the same phrase.

Is it just me or have people started using the same phrases more often and faster than before? Reminds me of when everybody started saying "God forbid" a few months ago.

Can you find me some notable examples?

While I'm not against people not-using Twitter/X (or any other platform): would it have been better to keep the account as a 'placeholder' so no one else can grab it? Have a post saying "We do not monitor this account." or some such?
jedimastert · 14 days ago
I don't think twitter allows someone to take over an account after it's been deleted

What‘s going on with all these code-2-music tools these days? See other front page discussion about strudel.cc [1]. Did I enter an established bubble or is there a rising trend? It‘s incredible, though, what people are able to obtain with it, especially when built-up during a live session [2].

I think the creator of the video you've linked has had a couple videos go viral, which may be part of it

I am very happy that we get the advent of code again this year, however I have read the FAQ for the first time, and I must admit I am not sure I understand the reasoning behind this:

> If you're posting a code repository somewhere, please don't include parts of Advent of Code like the puzzle text or your inputs.

The text I get, but the inputs? Well, I will comply, since I am getting a very nice thing for (almost) free, so it is polite to respect the wishes here, but since I commit the inputs (you know, since I want to be able to run tests) into the repository, it is bit of a shame the repo must be private.

jedimastert · 18 days ago
The inputs are part of the validation that you did the question, so they're kind of a secret.

Is it possible and cost-covering to create an ad-sponsored service that discloses what ad networks collect about users - i.e. age, location, preferences, interests, pregnancy, illnesses etc?

Because let’s be honest - all of us know that a lot of data points are being collected about us, countless articles have been written about the insanity of cookie and user-data monetization networks - still it appears to be a privilege to few to tap into that data trove.

I personally haven’t seen an effort to try and make this transparent. Efforts like this page are commendable and informative, much like amiunique or other services - still they lack the tangible information that sharing this information with “the world” reveals about an affected individual.

Why hasn’t this been done yet? Why is this seemingly not trivial?

jedimastert · 19 days ago
I'm unaware of how other platforms work, but for Google you can just see what buckets have been associated with your account:

https://myadcenter.google.com/controls

I'm not sure how that would work from an ad-buying perspective, from what I understand you essentially choose which buckets you'd like to show ads to? Like I don't think ad-buyers get the whole dossier for the person they're showing ads to, the platform just decides "from what you've told us, this person seems likely to like your ads"

This sounds it will be a milestone recorded in the history books in the chapter of the accelerating downfall of the US empire into hyperinflation...
jedimastert · a month ago
The US is not even close to the first modern country to move away from single cent coins, and there are many examples of others that don't have "hyperinflation", for example the Netherlands, Italy, and Canada.

People have been talking about getting rid of the penny for decades.

Wow, what an absolute blast from the past.

The page styling is harkening back to the style of some EARLY early personal amateur niche sites. It reminds me of like Time Cube <https://web.archive.org/web/20150506055228/http://www.timecu...> or like Neocity pages, even TempleOS in the earlier days. T

It's really taking me back, I'm actually getting a little emotional...

The water dispensing/ice making stuff just seem like a needless complication to me, with extra parts that probably decrease the life of the machine.

I just want a high quality, decent-looking box that stops food from going off.

That's a fair point
