I am going to try it. One nice thing about JetBrains IDEs is that they have all the functionality of the DataGrip database IDE built in.

This will be an issue for some users. Further down the page is a section on data collection:

Does my IDE send any data to JetBrains?

The terms of the non-commercial agreement assume that the product may also electronically send JetBrains anonymized statistics (IDE telemetry) related to your usage of the product’s features. This information may include but is not limited to frameworks, file templates used in the product, actions invoked, and other interactions with the product’s features. This information does not contain personal data.

I treat the spirit of these licenses as: "if you have reasonable expectation of making money from your use of it, please buy a license. Otherwise, we appreciate the mindshare."

Practically speaking, the license is probably much closer to "if you are making prodigious amounts of money, and you are using our software, then you had better buy a license to avoid a legal situation."

And if I were making prodigious amounts of money I'd be happy to go back and pay JetBrains the $274.8 a year that RubyMine costs per person for a company license. Aside being the decent thing to do, I'd like to contribute to JetBrains so they continue updating a tool that helped me build my company.

The Russians can work to swing an election with having to collude with the Trump campaign. They can just to their propaganda without saying anything to anybody.

Money is a factor, but not the only factor. Trump also had a gigantic Russian propaganda campaign on his side. And the Russians are good at that kind of operation. So Trump also had Russian money on his side, just not in the form of cash.

Was there a point in recent memory where it wasn’t? As a non-American I’d always considered them to be the Oxford and Cambridge (respectively) of the US.
andrewl · 25 days ago
Some would say Harvard and Yale are the Oxford and Cambridge of the US. But we’re a big country, and we have a lot of schools. Many lists of top schools include these, alphabetically ordered:

Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Rice University, Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University

But this discussion of rankings reminds me of a quote from John Allen Paulos:

In fact, trying to convert a partial ordering into a total one is, I think, at the root of many problems. Reducing intelligence to a linear ordering—a number on an IQ scale—does violence to the complexity and incomparabilities of people’s gifts.

I've read a few articles about him, but I never heard him speak. I just pulled this up, and I find it fascinating:

"Some thoughts on the presidency" [1]

(The site's index dates this to 1952, but it mentions "the events of 1974.")

Reading this just reminds me that you need to be involved in local politics if you want change.

They voted against building an early warning system because, as one person put it the money coming from FEMA was:

> Resident 2: And I'm here to ask this Court today to send this money back to the Biden administration, which I consider to be the most criminal treasonous communist government ever to hold the White House.

These are the gibbering idiots that will represent you. Biden wasn't even the most "Communist Government" of the previous 10 years.

Not entirely sure (as an outsider) what makes him Communist outside of not throwing Sieg Hiels when he was elected.

For a lot of these people the term Communist is basically a synonym for sick or evil. I have seen very extreme people using Communist and homosexual interchangeably as terms for what they consider immorality. "They're homosexual, communists trying to destroy America." "It's a Jewish, homosexual agenda." "What about Senator John Smith's wife?" "She's a homosexual, too."
