I heard Germans hate American root beer because they think it tastes like toothpaste and that very thought ruined root beer for me for a few years (until a sunny day when I was just dying for a root beer float and it absolutely hit the spot).

German here. Root beer does INDEED taste like toothpaste. Disguting. :)

We Germans drink Malzbier, which is equally unhealthy, but at least it tastes somewhat OK.

I typically jump on the latest macOS with enthusiasm. I once made the mistake to install the beta version of the next os, and well, that didn't go well for me. But typically, within X.1, I'm there.

However something shifted since this "visionOS" melted version of macOS (Tahoe); where I have absolutely no intension to upgrade from Sequoia. I hope they will fix it by the time I'll be forced to upgrade (post support deadline).

It started with the macOS that brought the iOS settings panel. We went from a logical structure of easily findable stuff to a complete mess. Just open the "Keyboard" settings on macOS today and it's bewildering how they could ship this and think this is fine. Steve would roll in his grave.

The process to allow running applications that are unsigned is just a horrible hack. It feels like a last minute "shove it and move on!".

By 2035 I wonder if we'll be all running KDE or WindowMaker and the hell with modern OS GUI.

From a Gestalt standpoint, human relations with desktop computers are not the same as with thumb driven mobile OS or air-pinch driven vision OS, period. The hell with "glass" or "flat" design. Desktop OS should be as forgettable as possible, as it's about having long stints of flow, not giving a feeling of "air" or "play".

I have updated as soon as possible and I if you asked me, I couldn't tell you what is different now. Everything I do on a daily basis still works exactly the same. If there are some weird more rounded corners somewhere now, I don't consciously notice them. The glassy effects look cool but after a week you don't even think about them any more.
martin82 commented on Leak confirms OpenAI is preparing ads on ChatGPT for public roll out   bleepingcomputer.com/news... · Posted by u/fleahunter

- ~1 billion users in just 3 years

- Extremely personal data on users

- Novel way of introducing and learning more about sponsored products

- Strong branding for non-techie people (most normal people don't know what Claude or Gemini are)

- An app that is getting more and more addictive/indispensable

I think OpenAI is going to kill it in ads eventually. This is why Meta and Google went all in on AI. Their lucrative digital ad business is in an existential threat.

I think people who kept saying there is no moat in AI is about to be shocked at how strong of a moat there actually is for ChatGPT.

All free LLM chat apps will need to support ads or they will eventually die due to worse unit economics or run out of funding.

PS. Sam just said OpenAI's revenue will finish at $20b this year. 6x growth from 2024. Zero revenue from non-sub users. What do you guys think their revenue will end up in 2026?

Why should ads be a moat???

People hate ads. I have changed from ChatGPT to Grok and have felt absolutely no difference in my usage patterns, just getting better answers.

Every competitor has cloned ChatGPTs UI/UX and API, so hopping between competitors is a no-brainer. There is no moat.

At this point, it’s clear these sort of measures will go through, if not now but in some foreseeable future. What would be our best bet moving forward? Moving to signal/telegram?

Keychat or Whitenoise.

The bottleneck of most applications is acquiring enough users to hit a technical bottleneck.
martin82 · 2 months ago
That is not the case any more. The "users" show up in the shape and form of malicious AI crawling bots that don't honor your robots.txt nor apply any kind of self-throttling.

We all know this. As people in the tech industry. As people on this website. We know this. The question is, what are we going to do about it? We spend enough time complaining or saying "I'm going to quit facebook" but there's Instagram and Threads and whatever else. And you alone quitting isn't enough. We have to help the people really suffering. We can sometimes equate social media to cigarettes or alcohol and relate the addictive parts of that but we have to acknowledge tools for communication and community are useful, if not even vital in this day and age. We have to find a way to separate the good from the bad and actively create alternatives. It does not mean you create a better cigarette or ban alcohol for minors. It means you use things for their intended purpose.

We can strip systems like X, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, TikTok, etc of their addictive parts and get back to utility to value. We can have systems not owned by US corporations that are fundamentally valuable to society. But it requires us, the tech savvy engineering folk to make those leaps. Because the rest of society can't do it. We are in the position of power. We have the ability.

We can do something about it.

I wrote something to that effect two days ago on a platform I'm building. https://mu.xyz/post?id=1763732217570513817

We can do something about it:

Just not use those services. X is addictive, but otherwise utterly unnecessary. It seemed useful about 8 years ago when you could get tech insights form industry veterans on a daily basis and then use them in your own company. Those days are long gone.

Just. Don't. Use. Those. Services.

Easiest life-hack ever for a happier and more productive life.

At this point I 100% see the EU as a failed experiment and I would love to witness a mass exodus of the slavic countries, and then Germany and France. Burn this thing to the ground. Nothing good came out of it.

Seems like this is very under-spec'd in terms of RAM. I have my doubts that this will run modern games at acceptable performance.
