The haggling involved in car buying is a choice. Over the years various sellers have used “no haggling” as a selling point, Saturn for instance. But I can walk into any dealership and choose to pay the listed price without haggling.
gaadd33 · 3 months ago
Assuming you pay via dealership financing that is likely true but many dealerships have a different price for a car if you are paying cash for it.

Seconded, except I don't trust most add-ons and don't want to have to trust them.

I want an easy way to launch a disposable browser session in any browser, totally isolated, with add-ons chosen (and downloaded) at launch time, and then erased of with the rest of the session when its last open page is closed.

I think Firefox focus does that on android, I'm sure there's a way to get the same result on a desktop with some flags and pointing to a config file (or a read only profile folder maybe?)

Robert Fico, Donald Trump, Charlie Kirk, Solomon Pena, Fumio Kishida, Andriy Parubiy, Alejo Vidal-Quadras Roca, Shinzo Abe, Jair Bolsonaro...

All of them represents of right orientated politics and are a victims of assassination in recent years.

Jair Bolsonaro is still alive at least according to mainstream media, do you have any links to where he was killed in an assassination?

Ehhhhh maybe in some spaces...

I would need to see Waymo be able to handle something like Southeast Michigan before I could even get comfortable with trusting it to get me ubered t/o from home for maintaining the vehicle I need to commute when I can take a remote day or two...

And then also delivering that for a good cost.

I put it that way because, I do tip Uber drivers well (unless they cray cray) and they would need to properly 'undercut' uber with whatever model they serve up in more complex areas.

gaadd33 · 5 months ago
Why is southeast Michigan difficult to drive in? I don't know anything about the area but I would guess if GPS navigation works and it's less dense than SF/LA, most of the major issues are solved?

Did anyone else notice they are flying narrow-body aircraft across the Atlantic?

Perhaps testing a trans-Atlantic flight using a narrow-body. Currently, everyone only flies wide-body aircraft. This may be a feasibility test to fly smaller aircraft (737, A320, etc) transatlantic and train narrow-body check airmen in transatlantic crossings.

This would be an interesting change and development.

gaadd33 · 5 months ago
Jetblue only flies narrow bodies across the Atlantic, I'm sure there are a number of others too.

These SPF craze sounds a bit ridiculous once you realize how sunscreens work: sunscreens are just ZnO and/or TiO2 dispersed in oil. They're fundamentally just base white oil paint(in the way donuts are topologically just coffee mugs).

The core operating principle of sunscreens is that, the more your skin is covered in opaque inorganic metal oxides, the less it is exposed to harmful UV lights. There would be a lot of little tricks and additional paints to make it less irritating and less crazy looking to wear, but the point is, sunscreens fundamentally rely on opacity.

I think just knowing that lets one have a lot more of intuition about sunscreens than reading bunch of sales brochures on SPF or PA figures or wondering if the fancy ones are worth it.

gaadd33 · 5 months ago
A lot of them these days are things like Uvinul A Plus (Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate) and Tinosorb S/P. They essentially act as UV filters similar to physical barriers. Many aren't available in the US, I believe due to FDA regulation of sunscreen but not totally sure why.

200%/yr starting from $10,000 => still needs a day job for a number of years.

This is why Wall Street is able to hire talented young traders, some of whom will develop profitable systems. Over time, some of them are able to amass enough savings and the track record necessary to get investors. But at t=0, somebody has to pay the rent.

gaadd33 · 8 months ago
If you can reliably generate 200% a year after fees/taxes/etc, you could just get a bunch of credit cards and use broker margin on top of that. It wouldn't surprise me if you could easily start with 200k at that point. Sure the first year would be rough, like grad student living but you would quickly be in the six figures.

Are there any good options for an off-site zfs backup server besides a colo?

Would be interested to know what others have set up as I'm not really happy with how I do it. I have zfs on my NAS running locally. I backup to that from my PC via rsync triggered by anacron daily. From my NAS I use rclone to send encrypted backups to Backblaze.

I'd be happier with something more frequent from PC to NAS. Syncthing maybe? Then just do zfs sync to some off site zfs server.

gaadd33 · 8 months ago
I think Rsync.net supports zfs send/receive

I would add another metric: how are businesses doing since the change? I was walking around the city on a Wednesday evening and it was utterly eerie how empty it felt. This past weekend seemed to be the exact opposite thanks to the nice weather, but I haven't seen that level of emptiness.

I notice empty storefronts and anecdotally, I feel like there is an increasing number. I have a friend who opened a store downtown just before this happened. I don't dare ask yet, but I can't see it being a benefit for small businesses.

gaadd33 · 9 months ago
Empty storefronts in lower Manhattan have become more prevalent especially as Walgreens has been downsizing their Duane Reade locations and banks have reduced branch numbers. Historically I've heard that landlords try to hold out for high rent paying large corporations but in the past few years there are less and less of those tenants. Also I'm sure it's tied to the 10 year lease renewal/rent increase cycle.

Anecdotally, I notice a lot more foot traffic in Fidi than last year and far less traffic when I do need to take a taxi or uber. It seems like greater foot traffic would be a benefit for your friend's store unless it's a destination store that sells large products (furniture/appliances/etc).
