fqye commented on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users   nbcnews.com/tech/tech-new... · Posted by u/Leary

I think apps like TikTok or YouTube Shorts literally brainwash people. It’s one of the dumbest things ever invented on the Internet, yet incredibly addictive at the same time.

I can't believe how ignorant some people could be.

It is so easy to find reports and evidence of how Tiktok could be of great value to people.

The coverage of TikTok's closure on this site is just sort of tabloid at this point. The culture of HN ceteris paribus hates social media significantly more than the average person. That and its western bias makes questions about the TikTok ban's effects on this site really silly. The folks here are probably some of the most opinionated, least impartial voices to discuss this issue with. A discussion about the ban's knock-on effects among creators, users, and larger GenZ culture around it isn't going to happen because this site doesn't really have much of those populations on it.

As far as what's next, it's up to the Biden and Trump admins to see what happens next. If deadlines are extended, what does a good divestiture settlement mean for TikTok? Can the executive department get away with not enforcing this law? And of course, the question that really lies ahead of us: what does this mean for other social media based outside of the US like Telegram, Line, and KakaoTalk?

Some opinions here are super ignorant. Yes Tiktok has lots of silly videos but it also is a way for many talented people to reach their audience. Many small business owners and indie artists depend on it to make a living.

I initially agreed with the author but at a second thought, I found the author made a big mistake of not distinguishing different types of quality.

The article talked about mostly entertainment or art related quality. However when it comes to utility related quality, it is a totally different story. It is obvious. I even don't need to expand on that.

fqye commented on Taylor Swift didn’t fall for FTX because she asked a simple question   finance.yahoo.com/news/ta... · Posted by u/JoshGlazebrook

> Swift avoided getting dragged in FTX’s collapse because the singer did her due diligence, and asked one important question: “Can you tell me that these are not unregistered securities?”, according to South Florida attorney Adam Moskowitz. Moskowitz, one of the lawyers representing the plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit

I do not for a second believe that Taylor Swift herself asked this literal question. It is a summarization of the due diligence her team performed, as paraphrased by the attorney charging everyone else.

Take it with a grain of salt - this whole guy's legal case rides on the implication that all of the defendants knowingly had a duty to perform due diligence. And so proving that some celebrities like Taylor Swift backed out - not because of money or scheduling but because they understood that they were trading securities illegally - is important to his case.

Personally, I come down on the side of the defendants on this one. When Larry David was hired to do a superbowl commercial for FTX, how much was he really expected understand about securities law? Could we really argue he was in on the fraud? If he did a superbowl commercial for Chipotle we wouldn't expect him to perform his own health inspections.

Why is it impossible for Talyor Swift to ask that question herself? Because she is a blonde singer?

It is very common for someone top of one's trade to command respectable knowledge and skill in another trade.

Einstein was a decent violin player. It wouldn't be a surprise if he asked some deep questions in musics in certain circumstances.

Talyor Swift has got to the top and sustained at the top of probably the most competitive business, and keeps her wealth growing. She has certainly financial knowledge and discipline. I am pretty sure she is capable of asking that question.

It already happened this year.

I don't think it was full out from Russia's side. They could still mobilize millions and use nukes. They haven't really bombed Kyiv's critical infrastructures and government buildings, for example president's office.

I think Putin will bet it all on full out war to conquer Ukraine in 2023. I wish I would be wrong.
