You've replied before I even had a chance to add a second sentence! Edit: admittedly it is taking longer than usual...

I've answered that point many times, e.g. recently here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46378818. If you take a look at that and have a question that isn't answered there (or here), I'd be happy to take a crack at it.

I haven't had a chance to look at the flaggers of these recent stories to verify that they fit the same pattern, but the pattern is so well-established that it would be shocking if they didn't. Btw, when you say "anything that goes against MAGA", the converse is the case as well (possibly even a bit more so). And when I say (quoting the comment I just linked to):

> There are some accounts that abuse flags in the following sense: they only ever flag political stories, and their flags are always aligned with the same political position. When we see accounts doing that, we usually take away their flagging rights.

... I didn't add that we do this the same way in either political direction, because that goes without saying, or ought to. But I'm saying it explicitly here.

This is a really rough spot, giving users the tools to remove visibility from a post will eventually get abused. I would genuinely be interested in some form of anonymized stats on the individual accounts and the posts they are flagging but that's a whole deal.

Am I wrong that there used to be a flagged option on the lists page, or am I missing where that is?

> DOGE is doing this, it's not a "scapegoat", and Trump is not going to negotiate anything here, that's ridiculous.

DOGE follows Trump's direction and acts on his behalf, as you must know. They make a big deal out of DOGE so Trump's name is less attached to these actions. Then they can take much of the blame with them when they go away, with Trump and the GOP blaming them for 'excesses'.

> Trump is not going to negotiate anything here, that's ridiculous.

> What leverage do you have for the DOGE boys?

You don't understand how negotiations work. Everyone has interests, strengths and weaknesses, and power. You need to make it in Trump's interest to keep the CVE program.

Everyone saying they are helpless, and that anything else is ridiculous, are panicking. Very unfortunately - dangerously - many people legitimize the panic. It's so normalized that it's "ridiculous" not to panic.

Every day you continue this behavior, you fall further and further behind and lead others in that direction. Will you wake up in time?

figgis · a year ago
Currently the "discussion of leverage" you are talking about is out of the hands of the leaders who run these programs.

The amount of disrespect you have shown for someone that is just telling you 99% of federal workers have absolutely no leverage says a lot.

I remember being very confused on this when going to an outlet store after college. They were basically rebranded malls, at that point. Not at all what I was expecting from high school days going to outlets.

I apologize for jumping in this convo with unrelated stuff but I was looking at my history and since I can't message you I just wanted to let you know years later how much your reply here resonates with me now. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18475792

Has anyone made a game where cheating is not just explicitly allowed but is in fact the game? It really seems like there could be something there.
figgis · a year ago
Unsure if anyone has made a game specifically for that. But there are plenty of intentionally unsecure servers (no VAC, or other anti-cheat) in games like counter strike for Hacker vs Hacker.

Like you I also recently restarted watching SG-1 for the first time since I was a kid. It holds up a lot better than I expected it to. There's the occasional eyerolling cliche (and Carter's dialog about internal vs external gonads is kinda ridiculous) but like you said the cliches are also lampshaded pretty often. I just watched an episode where the Stargate broke and there was an exchange that went something like this—

General Hammond: How long will it take to fix the Stargate?

Technician: It'll be about 24 hours sir

Hammond: You have 12 hours

Technician. Sir, that's not how this works... it'll take about 24 hours

Hammond: Oh, okay then

Just finished rewatching sg1 as well and in a later episode Carter even makes fun of herself for the absurdity of that first episode gonads comment.

Wait, are you seriously complaining about executing code you downloaded from the internet, that installs a package manager - i.e. a piece of software that downloads executable code from the internet?!
figgis · 7 years ago
Not the OP but I am very concerned with telling people to pipe anything from curl straight to your shell.

They still don't have a terminal application that deserves the name. The crap they built into the Ubuntu app is still the same torturous parody that's used in the DOS cmd interpreter. Even Cygwin has a much better terminal than that.

I guess he meant they don't lock your whole account but only stop a single server.

I should have been clearer. This is exactly what I meant.

Really? Big European VPS hosts like OVH just turn off your stuff until the problem goes away.

Hardly fly-by-night.

figgis · 7 years ago
Not in my experience they don't. I use OVH and nfoservers and I've had an issue like this exactly once on both hosts.

On OVH one of my servers was hacked and running typical scripts that are run once that happens (port checking, common admin credentials, brute force attempts, etc)

They cut off all internet access to and from the server and sent me an alert stating what was happening and that I needed to VNC into the server, resolve the issue, and let them know how/why it happened and how I resolved the issue. Once that was done they just removed all the blocks on the server and we all went on our merry way.

Edit: To clarify the VNC console is on their site, not a remote connection.
