you know how some people say that joe rogan is gwyneth paltrow for men? i.e. he's a panderer and a snake oil salesperson that packages their snake oil and pithy advice in such a way that it's palatable and relatable to men?

every day on hn there are countless articles that are of the self-help variety from various entrepreneurs and startup celebrities and whatever. why is this kind of content so popular on a place that prides itself on rigorous rational inquiry (or whatever it is that's on the masthead)? basically i see people nodding along with the most superficial "wisdom" and i don't understand

1) why people are fine with being pandered to

2) why people don't seek out counsel from trained professionals (i.e. therapists) or at least the truly wise (the steinbecks of the world).

in reality i know the answer to these questions (that people here are no different from joe rogan/gwyneth paltrow fans they just have a different flavor) but i just wish hn would drop the pretense about "curious discourse" or whatever.

I don’t really understand the I think he gives great advice.

It’s funny you say this because I was going to comment that this is the comment I see everyday on HN whenever anyone gives business advice.

The HN comment section of every article written by an entrepreneur (especially a successful one) that gives basic advice is filled with comments about how they are tired of business people selling them a dream. You almost always can find a comment on survivorship bias, luck, privilege, etc.

> 1) why people are fine with being pandered to

Have you ever considered that people actually find these articles useful ? HN has been extremely valuable for me. I’ve learned so much about the startup world and it’s awesome to here from people who have built successfully companies themselves.

BS dude. He wasn't laughed at. The man went to Princeton. Right next to other billionaires like Andy Florence. His family was rich etc... He was already a millionaire. It's not a rags-to-riches story by any stretch.

I always find comments like this interesting. This is similar to the comments I see whenever anyone says something remotely nice about a wealthy person on HN. What does going to Princeton have anything to do with being laughed at for selling books on the internet ? Who claimed he had a rags-to-riches story ? It oozes insecurity and envy.

Yes. She didn't get the money only for being "the wife" as many people think.

She worked at Amazon and she is one of the people that made the company succeed.

If she didn't get the money for being Jeff's wife then how did she get the money.

Have you seen the Robinhood interface, it's gamified to the extreme, and you expect 20 year olds to be mature enough to resist temptation?

Yes.

A lot of commenters are completely missing the point of this site somehow. The site says:

> Not all websites need Javascript to be beautiful and usable. This is a showcase of the Javascript-less web.

It does not say:

> JavaScript is bad and no one should ever use it.

earthtobishop · 5 years ago
The problem is most of the websites that are being showcased are ugly and basic.

First link is literally only four lines of text. Three of those are links. Second link is dead. Third is basically the first but with emojis ... Ok, I stopped after that.

What exactly is this trying to showcase again?

Yeah the majority of the websites seem like throw away projects that were made in 5 minutes. Whoever created this probably should have taken the time to find JavaScript free websites that are actually presentable.

This perspective makes it sound like the internet equivalent of Dollar Tree or Dollar General.

I totally get the Wish hate but I don’t think most here realize why it’s so popular.

My family in the Midwest loves wish because they purchase from there knowing the quality isn’t going to be superb. My mom buys random things from them like clothes, jewelry, and random appliances for literally $5. She’s willing to wait three weeks to get her stuff because it’s such a good deal. My dad was able to get a quality DSLR for $50. He doesn’t care if the brand is unknown.

Most people on Hacker News (software engineers) probably wouldn’t need to use an app like Wish. It wouldn’t make sense.
