The iPad software has been lagging behind its hardware for so long now.

My iPad and laptop both have an M1; the laptop has more RAM but they are effectively equally capable on paper. And yet, due to a series of entirely artificial restrictions, my iPad is useless for entire categories of applications. That power sits unavailable for me to ever utilise.

I’m sure the iPad Pro can live up to its name if you’re an artist or designer or maybe even something that involves 3D modelling, but outside of that absolutely not.

It’s a terrible shame because I think there really is value in a computer that fills the space between a phone and a “real” computer. Especially given its modularity (though the obscenely high pricing of Apple’s keyboard cases is another problem).

At this point the thing most holding the iPad back is Apple itself. Anything to do with software development is impossible or involves remotely interfacing with a second computer. The things it does support are tedious and frustrating, like file management (Files.app is hopeless) and multitasking (Stage Manager is a convoluted mess).

What the hell was even the point in splitting iPadOS out if it’s just gonna have the exact same limitations as iOS. I got a good deal on a used iPad Pro but when it comes time to upgrade this thing I’ll just go back to the middle of the road model for a nice, but ultimately unnecessary consumption device.

I'm in the market for a tablet upgrade because my Galaxy S3 Tab is feeling quite laggy and is years out of support. I was excited to give the iPad Air a shot as I've heard so many good things about about the M1 chip. But the locked down nature of iOS made it impossible to recreate my workflows and seemingly failed to really take advantage of the M1, so I returned the Air and am currently looking into the S9 Tab.

Did you know you could type [[## in Obsidian and it will autocomplete all headings available in the current vault instead of just the current note with [[#?

It's barely mentioned and I don't even remember what post I saw this in on the Obsidian forum.

You can also link to a section/paragraph using (if I remember correctly) [[#^

Flash Boys by Michael Lewis was a good read, IMHO.

At $27 I can get 4-5 Pi Pico Ws. Between that and the ESP32 product line this isn't really competitive.

I'll probably get a few just to play around with it. I have so many hats and shields at this point it would be a waste not to update the MCU.

clarents · 2 years ago
I think your second comment is the explanation for your first. There are certainly cheaper boards available, but the form factor of the Uno allows for use with a whole host of hats and shields, and releasing an updated board with more powerful hardware allows for more complex projects using those hats and shields.

I think the most efficient construction on the moon would be inflated structures constructed underground in the mooncaves.

Let the caves block the radiation and just focus on the thermal insulation and the air pressure integrity.

This means it would be possible to build large volume spaces, like sporting arenas.

And that’s the segue I need to share a deck promoting “Moonball.”

“A Modest Thesis on Moonball:

Billions of people will want to watch professional athletes playing sports on the moon. A successful event or sports franchise could fund economically sustainable human habitation by 2035.”

I would love any feedback on this totally modest proposal: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/16QpeWjf1Hbxp_15D5Vtx...

I'm sold. Where can I buy Moonball swag?

I was surprised to hear that he uses GitHub Copilot. I'd assumed that with his understanding of the language that it would be easier/faster to just type what he wanted, but he said that 1) he's not a very good typist and so it can safe him some time and 2) Copilot can help fill in code for concepts that he's learned but would need to look up as a refresher.

Same, but I’d love to own as few things as possible, but have access to things when I need them.

At this point in my life, I would just like to be a friendly NPC that helps open doors for other people.

Ok, we've replaced nanoparticle-modified microrobots with antibiotic-loaded microalgae* in the title above. We've also inmiced it. Thanks!

* because those words appear in the abstract

clarents · 3 years ago
Thank you. I also love the verb "inmiced" given how often that's relevant for studies that are posted here.

Oh cool, I didn't know they had this feature. I wish they had feedly integration, too.

I went insane setting up key combinations for everything in VSCode specifically so that I never have to use my mouse. It's painful - but it works. Eventually your fingers just remember.

Could you share your settings.json file? I'd be very interested in your setup.
