I don’t understand the conclusion. Why are you glad that your parents forced you for 6 years, if this had basically nothing to do with your later-found joy for music? Couldn’t the same invitation have happened if you just tried piano for a couple months and remembered your one jazz tune?

Maybe because kids don't really know what they wanted.

If he didn't play the first 6years, he won't be able to enjoy "jamming" with friends

From the comments below, I am fast coming to conclusions that it is impossible to get a rational clear headed discussion on Elon in HN

Yep. Don’t forget immigration, that can be a big reason to stay. There was this famous pic of Elon with the some of the remaining Twitter staff and let’s just say they looked quite international. Obviously SV is multicultural and you shouldn’t assume individual traits from appearance, but, for a group it’s somewhat reasonable to assume a fair amount of H1B hostages with a huge incentive to stay, especially in the current economic climate.

Speaking as a former H1B holder.

Saying people "looked quite international" is prejudicial

You don't get a pass because Elon and Twitter happens to be involved.

It is very unlikely if upto has of Twitter 2000+ employees are "H1B hostages", but I doubt that will serve your purpose

If I google "why is it bad for google to track you", I can find a hundred articles breathlessly telling you all the ways google is tracking you, and a hundred more on how to stop it - but none answering the question.

Can someone explain to me why it's a problem? (I make the assumption that even if google doesn't do it, your carrier does, so it doesn't add anything additional to "government's ability to repress/harass".)

If you don't have any problem with your daily itenary beinf tracked, then no explanation will be good enough for you. Just respect the fact that people don't want their daily activities available to 3rd parties

No, there wasn't. If he could have paid $1b to be out of this deal, he would have.
amachefe · 3 years ago
He did not even offer to pay it, that was the reason for the law suit.

anyone who actually think he was forced to pay 43bn when he could have paid 1bn. (even 2bn) are just not thinking correctly.

Nope.

There was a provision that Musk would be on the hook for $1B if a third party (e.g. regulators) blew up the deal in a couple enumerated ways. No such option was available to Musk himself.

Read the actual SEC link. No one will pay 43bn is he can even pay 2bn and out!

It is embedded on this link https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/8/23201004/twitter-to-sue-el...

> managing the exodus of users (size:?) that will happen regardless;

This is probably the biggest risk in this acquisition. Twitter wasn't doing anything special, and it's easy to launch a clone of their business model. Elon's talking about taking an axe to the things that keep the lights on at Twitter: effective content moderation and talent.

> Twitter wasn't doing anything special, and it's easy to launch a clone of their business model. And yet nobody has done it? People think social media is easy to start and succeed. FYI, its like catching lightning.

No, he signed a contract to buy something with no contingencies at what everyone quickly came to realize was 2x to 3x what it was worth.

Twitter’s management, acting in the best interest of their shareholders, used the court to force him to hold to the contract when he tried to walk. Musk decided to buy the company for the agreed on price rather than have that imposed on him by court order after (more) embarrassing discovery.

Seeing Musk as a business genius in this deal requires ignoring nearly every event in the saga.

amachefe · 3 years ago
There is an opt out of 1bn. That is the only thing he would pay if he wanted to walk...

What these comparative analyses keep missing is that Musk Twitter is an LBO company with billions in loans on its books. It's private, which takes public shareholder pressure off, but it's also directly losing billions of dollars in debt service. The pressure to generate some kind of stable income, soon, is probably immense.

It's worth keeping in mind that despite the brave face, Musk didn't want to buy Twitter. In fact: he desperately didn't want to buy Twitter. He's been forced to do so by the Delaware courts.

amachefe · 3 years ago
It is joke being taken seriously that he was forced to buy it. No one will spend $43bn to avoid paying 1bn (opt out fee)

He decided to buy because he feels its better to own it.

Found the article very interesting and, loved reading. We find fulfillment in different things, and there is no one single best for many people.

PS: I found the snarky responses and accusations of "poverty tourism" to be amusing. It looks like there are a lot of bitter people who sees only their way and demonize anyone else who dont see it.

Live your life, if you find physical work a therapy, do you... if you find seating and staring at a screen your own therapy.. do you!

Hopefully, we stop trying to justify perfectly clear articles to people are only interested in making other as miserable as they are.
