Does that ever work? After all, an enterprise that cannot grow at the same speed is effectively shrinking, isn't it?

Does anyone have a TLDR/highlights of the release?

As someone with people who report to me, my #1 job is to make sure they’re effective, happy, productive. Empowering them generates more productivity than me quietly doing stuff myself.

Sure, but is constant "direct attention" the best way to empower engineers? I would argue that systemic improvements (e.g. onboarding process, good documentation, team communication or company culture) are more impactful since they scale better and address the root of the problem. Of course, you need both, but saying that everything other than hand-holding is "just filler" shows a lack of understanding of good leadership.

Man MIT seems to really be losing its clout (PR capital) especially in the last decade or so. (And I am not usually one to participate in the “dumping on prestigious institutions” meme that’s grown in popularity as well.)

This is obviously one sided, but assuming most of this is factual… not good.

Their handling of the Aaron Swartz case (rightfully) caused a massive hit to their reputation.

One thing I found that helps in some cases, that I wish was said (and actually practiced) when I was a junior developer, is, “my main job is to help you get comfortable with everything and help you be successful. Everything else about my job is basically just filler for whenever you don’t need my direct attention. Never ever feel like you’re inconveniencing me because helping you is my job.”

That might be taking it a bit too far?

Never run Windows updates. I've always seen shady behavior with them and they did nothing significant in my case for my system in any way.

I don't use windows at all but it is just giant pit of advertisements targeted towards the very basic computer users

Then your system is likely wide open to all kinds of known security vulnerabilities.

I would say that Kalanick and Neumann's mistakes were quite a bit worse than overhiring.
adambyrtek · 4 years ago
Sure, what I meant is that founder CEOs are not as irreplaceable as it might seem.

Reminder that Vlad Tenev founded Robinhood, an incredibly successful app that disrupted an industry and is still best in class. There really is no replacement for a founder CEO.
adambyrtek · 4 years ago
Would you say the same about Travis Kalanick or Adam Neumann?
