You write a lot about AI. If this is in your free time why not just take a break? If you are ten times more productive, rest for at least twice as much. I don’t get it.
Synthetic7346 · 3 days ago
I assume that if you take a break you'll have missed a lot when you come back, at the pace things are evolving. Which is OK for some people like OP but maybe not for simonw

Why not just not compare to others because it’s easy to game anything?

Just look for patterns and then act out of self interest. Nobody is coming to save you.

I’m no high IQ person but if I can figure out how to get a STEM job without STEM degree, make money by getting lucky at a unicorn, invest and sell for profit and invest again (only losers HODL so others can take profits), then there’s really no excuse why someone else can’t.

And I’m originally from a country that has like 70 IQ nationally or so it is said. So I’m not a genius, maybe the only quality I have that makes me different is I don’t know how to quit until I meet my goal.

More people should stop crying and be a man. Our ancestors literally survived against nature and each other so we could post here on HN. I don’t mean being able to lift 500lbs like a caveman either.

Exercise your brain, it gets stronger too because I have a hard time understanding concepts sometimes, but taking steps to break it down and digest it in pieces helps me. Takes a bit longer but hopefully you have tomorrow.

I have a Model Y with AI hardware version 4. It is phenomenal at self-driving, and if your impression of FSD is a year old or older, then you are woefully out of date in understanding where the tech is today. If I could, I would send my own grade school child off to her friend's houses and extracurricular activities in my car unaccompanied. It is safer than buses, taxis, and me. Not since Tesla created the first economically viable EV for the American public have I been as excited about a revolution in automotive technology. Other than the fact that Tesla still needs people out there manually driving to generate training data, I don't think Tesla should be selling cars at all. I fully support this move, and all I have to say is thank God for Waymo, so we can have good competition in the Robotaxi market.

I'm done listening to pundits doubt Elon. I haven't seen Wall Street forecast future economic and technological trends well at all. Elon has created an EV market, caught falling rocket boosters, created the leading AI "nonprofit", and launched a worldwide satellite internet service, mostly in the face of rent seeking financial professionals and hacker news SSEs calling him dumb. I'm not sure what else a man needs to do to prove he deserves a little deference in his strategic decisions.

Would you say it's better/safer than Waymo?

One of those speeches that makes you feel like you're living in history^TM

Those are the worst times to be alive in. I'd rather have those speeches in the past, and live in uninteresting times.

And the reason is all of you dumping cash into the market no matter what because John Bogle said so half a century ago.

I disagree - yes, some companies are overvalued, but it isn't because of index investors.

That's bad and those juniors should be taught to do better or be "managed out of the company".

Their job is to deliver code that they have proved to work.

This inspired me to write a longer form version of this: Your job is to deliver code you have proven to work https://simonwillison.net/2025/Dec/18/code-we-have-proven-to...

No, I've been using Gemini for help while learning / building my onprem k8s cluster and it has been almost spotless.

Granted, this is a subject that is very well present in the training data but still.

Synthetic7346 · 2 months ago
I found gemini 3 to be pretty lackluster for setting up an onprem k8s cluster - sonnet 4.5 was more accurate from the get go, required less handholding

That stood out to me too but my reaction was “whatever, just another promise that won’t age well”.
Synthetic7346 · 3 months ago
This holds true for the Steam Deck, so I can't imagine why they would promise it and not follow through.
Synthetic7346 commented on Despite what's happening in the USA, renewables are winning globally   thebulletin.org/2025/10/d... · Posted by u/pseudolus

The US is choosing to make itself increasingly redundant. Increasing speed whilst in Reverse gear whilst talking as if they're highway cruising in 5th.

It's nice to know that the rest of the world is still pushing forwards, up a steep hill, in first gear. I hope it can continue, and the hill shrinks.

Synthetic7346 · 4 months ago
A more apt analogy would be that everyone is going up the hill in 1st, and the US is going up in 5th, lugging the engine. It's a matte rif when and not if the engine stalls

People need to stop looking at it like this.

Healthcare is a triangle. There are three players. You, Insurance, and Doctor.

All three are adversaries and allies in different ways.

Synthetic7346 · 6 months ago
In reality the triangle is Doctors, Insurance, Hospitals, and you in the middle.
