DST was a mistake and it needs to die. It solves no problems and only creates them. And not even the type of problem that someone could profit from, just plain old complete waste of time for everyone problems.

Just stick to winter time (because that's the correct one) and adjust all working hours once and for all to be like summer time, for e.g. instead of business opening at 7AM and closing at 10PM they can open at 6AM and close a 9PM. There will be a period of adjustment, but we have a period of adjustment twice a year already, so nothing is lost.

Why match working hours to summer time? Because I want to have more sunlight by the time I'm done with work. Especially during winter. We have it completely backwards, if we are going to adjust our clocks we should adjust them in a way that gives us more sunlight during winter, not less. I don't care if it's dawning by the time I'm going to work where I will be stuck indoors for nine hours, I want sunlight when I'm free again.

In Superman III, the eponymous man straightens the leaning tower of Pisa, and in Superman II he spins the earth backwards to reverse time.

A better idea would be to un-tilt the earth’s axis, thus getting rid of variable day lengths, annual seasons, the need for DST etc, just one enjoyable spring day, every where, all year round.

The hardest bit of that Camp Bryan wiki is this disparity.

Ruby Jane McMillan - part of a meth supply ring. Sentenced to 38 months, completed less than 2 years.

Laurel Yurchick - had 50g of meth on her. Sentenced with intent to supply to 10years - not due for parole until 2029.

So one was clearly higher in the supply chain yet got sentenced to a third of the time?

LeonB · 5 months ago
> Yurchick was one of 21 people that had been indicted for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute kilogram quantities of methamphetamine in Texas and elsewhere from August 2019 to March 2021 … Yurchick subsequently pleaded guilty to that charge on February 1, 2022

Facts are public domain and can't be copyrighted (you can only argue your creative expression of them, ex in a textbook, is yours).

But I suppose that wouldn't apply to disinformation. So your made up bullshit is yours to keep!

LeonB · 5 months ago
Interesting point.

It’s a kind of reframing (or consequence of) the bullshit asymmetry principle.

I’d like governments to instead enforce monopoly laws and the FTC to sue for crappy business practices. I don’t want them playing speech police.
LeonB · 5 months ago
Yes, absolutely.

The survey could say, “given that the existence of corporate monopolies demonstrates weak and non functional governments, should governments a) cede more power to the monopolies, or b) pretend to claw power back from the monopolies?”

This survey is too vague to be worthwhile. Sure some of these are scary how many people say "yes", but people say yes all of the time to vague sounding pleasantries. When they say "responsible" say specific actions. Should people be arrested for what they post on social media when its an opinion? Should platforms automatically analyze all messages and automatically remove messages that it deems not truthful? Should the platform be liable in court for falsehoods? People will answer very differently to specifics than vagueness.
LeonB · 5 months ago
Absolutely.

They hand-wave tremendously complex questions, in such a way that the respondent is free to interpret them any way you wish.

A similar survey question might be:

> I am thinking of a number. Is it, a) too high or b) too low?

> If a platform lies or spread malicious content, it seems people want the platform to have the liability and consequences for the malfeasance.

Does the government then setup a ministry of truth? Who gets to decide that?

LeonB · 5 months ago
A “ministry of truth” would (I assume) be a part of the executive branch of government.

Whereas the creation of laws and the interpretation of laws are powers that the executive branch does not have, and are held separately by the legislative and judicial branches.

In a, well, y’know “functioning” democracy. Apparently.

This isn’t news. The alarm bells have been clanging away for decades. One of the scariest, is drug-resistant TB. I understand there’s also drug-resistant leprosy, but that doesn’t transmit easily.

I’m old enough to remember that penicillin cured almost everything. You started a 10-day course, and felt better in a day and a half.

The problem was that many folks stopped taking it, when they felt better.

These days, American meat is absolutely overflowing with antibiotics. I don’t know if there’s any kind of serious effort to address that.

> These days, American meat is absolutely overflowing with antibiotics. I don’t know if there’s any kind of serious effort to address that

There’s several clearly wrong claims in that paragraph alone.

Here’s one counter claim with sources:

https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/antibioticresistance...

“Less than 0.5% of all meat samples tested in 2018 contained detectable antibiotics (U.S. Residue Program). Farmers, processors, and regulatory agencies work together to get this number to zero.”

Please challenge the thoughts you carry around. Sometimes it’s isn’t so.

I never understood why the repair techs need my passcode to repair my iPhone (like replacing display or battery) and they suggest it as a first option unapologetically without even explaining privacy risks.
LeonB · 5 months ago
Recently I had the screen replaced on my child’s iPad. The tech asked for passcode, and I refused to provide it. The tech complained and said when I came to pick it up he’d need to guide me through some things.

Indeed, there were some settings that needed to be set, to ”help” the new screen.

Having said that — I’ve previously documented a case (well over 10 years ago) where I caught a local PC repair company who used their access to a machine of mine they were repairing - to quickly scan through the thumbnails of our personal photos, and look closer at any image which showed any flesh.

People expect to be trusted but don’t act in a trustworthy manner.
