Because chess offers more variety in strategy than "rush A", "rush B", "they're going squeaky", "rotate". It's particularly fun in-person, and shockingly, the generation coming up likes to look at screens less and less, and apparently isn't keen on smartphones.

The article makes it pretty. lear that the vast majority are using laptops and phones.

Is anyone more familiar with the locale able to provide more context as to why specifically these stores may not be profitable?

I have a mouse cable bungee.

Particularly useful for twitch based FPS shooters such as Counter Strike, but overall ensures never to get the cable in your way.

PS: You don't use wireless for competitive shooters. LAN Cable, cable mouse, etc.

For mice they may have used to be the case, but recently wireless has become more popular (at least in CSGO.) 3/5 of the most popular mice used by pros are wireless (including the #1 spot.)

Indeed. While I think learning algorithms and ds is a non-negotiable thing, in 90% of the companies out there in 90% of the situations one will never have to write a binary search from scratch or implement a queue from scratch. On the other hand, profiling, debugging, glueing things together via bash, etc., that’s what distinguishes you from the colleges who only write passable code.

I dropped out after a year of college and have since weaseled my way into a dev position, your observation could not be more true in my experience. I've since strongly considered going back to school for a degree, but as interesting and probably useful some of the material may be, I'm not convinced it's worth it as an investment into making me better at my job.

If only I could use 529 funds on some of these online course providers.

> I’ve never heard of a family being divided because its members dance different styles, but I am in one divided by political and religious opinions.

Being a dancer (lindy hop) with a large number of dancers in my social circle, dancing is actually a frequent source of tension among many couples around me.

Couples splitting up because one is heavily more invested in dancing than the other is a common occurence.

And don’t get me started on lindy hop vs west coast swing.

This unnerves me. My partner could and would dance all day, anywhere, any scenario. I have to be unbelievably drunk to come close to anything resembling dancing. Any event we go to together that involves dancing is intensely emotionally debilitating to me for that reason, and sometimes I worry that it's a basal insurmountable incompatibility between us.

I wrote an Android app for my little programming news aggregator, and published that on the Play Store because it was basically free (IIRC there might be a one-time signup fee). $99/yr is a ridiculous sum for the "privilege" of publishing in Apple's walled garden, and it's just not something I'm willing to do.

The arguments for paying for review, distribution, advertising, search, etc feel so disingenuous when the company is worth so much money and these apps are contributing to its bottom line.

I really hope that the EU is the one that finally breaks down this annoying wall. I might consider using an iOS device at that point, but absolutely and definitely not before that.

I don't know where Apple went wrong -- third-party software made them as big as they are today, and they decided to turn on developers at some point and make them jump through hoops for nebulous "reasons". And yet the app store is still just filled with so many low-quality apps, scams and the like. They just look semi-pretty on launch and don't crash within the first minute or so.

For publishing to the the Play Store, it's a one time US$25 fee.

Eating is immensly boring and I hated it as a kid. I wish I had something to distract myself from the boredom of eating.

Despite not having anything like that as a child I now, at 43, eat all my meals in front of a computer while gaming or watching or reading something.

That's why the have (had?) all that fun stuff on the back of the cereal box. Or the morning paper. It's not a new phenomenon that we strive to fill our idle time with some kind of stimulation.
