37signals | Rails programmer | Fully Remote (PST to CET)

37signals are hiring Rails programmers to work on our flagship products: Basecamp and HEY. We're accepting applications until June 6, 5pm US-Central time.

Everything at 37signals is built as a majestic monolith using Ruby on Rails and Hotwire for the front-end.

You'll be building new product features alongside a designer using our Shape Up methodology (https://basecamp.com/shapeup) as well as spending time addressing issues to make sure our apps are robust, and our codebase weed free.

We're a small team who get a lot done. The whole company runs on Basecamp, we work asynchronously with few meetings, and the company gets together IRL at meet-ups twice a year.

The salary for candidates matched as Programmer is $165,410. The salary for candidates matched as Senior Programmer is $197,819. Irrespective of where in the world you live.

More details on the job ad:

Feel free to get in touch directly if you have any questions: olly@37signals.com

Nice. Every ad should have (a) salary and (b) be a geo-irrelevant compensation package

kgabbott · 3 years ago
For (b), would also be really awesome if they explained how they chose these numbers. Given how specific it is, a salary of 197,819 seems to be derived from some function (e.g. average salary for a senior engineer position in SF).

Is Ruby on Rails experience mandatory? It appears to be an important requirement and application question.
danbmil99 · 3 years ago
Just a minor troll: I have 10+ yrs experience with Django, none with RoR. I suspect I could take a RoR position and do just fine, budgeting myself 5-10 hrs non-billed per week to get up the learning curve.

But why would I do that when all the evidence I've seen lately is that Python + Node are the present & future (maybe add go, rust), whereas RoR peaked years ago and is becoming a legacy/maintenance job? Why fill my head with that?

When is the last time anyone has heard of a company building from scratch on Ruby?

lylo · 3 years ago
Yes it is. The job ad states:

We’re looking for candidates with a strong track record of putting Rails to work and bringing products to life. You should be experienced in the framework, in Ruby, and with the staples of full-stack web development: HTTP, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

Framework Computer Inc | Senior Full Stack Engineer, Marketplace | REMOTE (US) | Full-time | https://jobs.lever.co/framework/1d6559b2-ccf9-4391-bded-6303...

(Note that this position doesn’t involve hardware/firmware development - just looking for an awesome full stack engineer with some Rails experience! Saying that upfront as the name of the company sometimes scares away web developers.)

At Framework, we believe the time has come for products that are designed to last. Founded in San Francisco in 2019, our mission is to remake Consumer Electronics to respect people and the planet.

Our first product is the Framework Laptop, a thin, light, high-performance notebook that can be upgraded, customized, and repaired in ways that no other notebook can. Alongside this, we've launched the Framework Marketplace to enable an ecosystem of parts and modules.

We are looking for a full-stack engineer to join our Marketplace engineering team building our eCommerce platform with Ruby on Rails and Solidus/Spree Commerce. This position will report to our Head of Marketplace and will work closely with our development partner based in Europe and our quickly growing internal marketplace development team based in the US for the design, implementation, testing, deployment and maintenance of all marketplace features. Like Basecamp, our frontend is 100% server-rendered HTML over the wire. No JSON APIs, no GraphQL, no React - just form submissions and links.

If you have any questions about the role, feel free to reach out to me directly at zmf (at) frame.work. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing your application!

It's kind of a shame this isn't a firmware position because that would be sweet.

You're in luck, we have a separate open Firmware position as well! See https://jobs.lever.co/framework for a full listing of our currently open positions.

Google | Software Engineer | Mountain View / Sunnyvale | Full time

We're looking for a software engineer to help work on the XLA Compiler for TPUs.

Things we do:

- Take machine learning models and make them run really fast, in really large systems.

- Participate in hardware co-design for future versions of the TPU. Members of our team frequently write proposals for new instructions and chip components.

- Assist internal and external customers on how to make their workloads run as fast as possible. When Deepmind built AlphaGo members from our team helped them get their models up and running on TPUs.

There is room on our team for anyone with an interest in traditional compilers, machine learning, high performance computing or hardware co-design. I joined in late 2020 and have found the work deeply interesting and deeply impactful.

Unfortunately I don't have any way around the traditional Google hiring processes. You'll have to go through: https://careers.google.com/jobs/results/93645599942812358-so...

Spacelift | Remote | Europe | Full-time | Senior Software Engineer | $80-120k

We're a VC-funded startup building an automation platform for Infrastructure-as-Code, adding a Policy-as-Code layer above it, in order to make IaC usable in bigger companies, where you have to take care of state consistency, selective permissions, a usable git flow, etc.

On the backend we're using 100% Go with AWS primitives. We're looking for backend developers who like doing DevOps'y stuff sometimes (because in a way it's the spirit of our company), or have experience with the cloud native ecosystem. Ideally you'd have experience working with an IaC tool, i.e. Terraform, Pulumi, Ansible, CloudFormation, Kubernetes, or SaltStack.

Overall we have a deeply technical product, trying to build something customers love to use, and already have a lot of happy and satisfied customers.

We promise interesting work, the ability to open source parts of the project which don't give us a business advantage, as well as healthy working hours. We've also got investment days on Fridays, when you can work on anything you want, as long as it could possibly benefit Spacelift in some way.

If that sounds like fun to you, please apply at https://grnh.se/3138190b5us

You can find out more about the product we're building at https://spacelift.io and also see our engineering blog for a few technical blog posts of ours: https://spacelift.io/blog/engineering

PS: Fear not, no whiteboarding!
