> The Apple Vision pro was not inevitable

I don't get the reason for this one being in the list. Is that an abusive product in some way?

yunohn · 4 hours ago
I think AR/VR definitely turns off a lot of people, me included. Further it is seen as anti-social and unnecessary to many. I think the lackluster sales prove the “not inevitable” point.
yunohn commented on JetBlue flight averts mid-air collision with US Air Force jet   reuters.com/world/america... · Posted by u/divbzero

Not sure I’d call crossing traffic “within a few miles” a near-miss. Even at full cruising speed of 500-600MPH (less because the JetBlue was still on a climb) the civilian aircraft would cover a mile in 6-7 seconds, so we are talking 18 to 24 seconds to close 3-4 miles.

Also, it a common for military aircraft to not have a transponder on, especially in the vicinity of threats. Without a transponder the civilian aircraft TCAS/ACAS would not warn about traffic.

Not sure how far off the coast of Venezuela this occurred, but there are some very real SAM threats the Air Force aircraft would need to worry about.

(edited typos)

> there are some very real SAM threats the Air Force aircraft would need to worry about

The US Air Force should /absolutely/ be worried about Venezuela fighting back, with SAMs or otherwise. This military action and potential war is a travesty and the whole world should condemn and ostracize the USA immediately.

Really? Anthropic is /the/ AI company known for anthropomorphizing their models, giving them ethics and “souls”, considering their existential crises, etc.

Reads like parody - nothing can explain this other than corruption. Did regulators never once audit their emissions? A factory that produces that exact gas? A similar thing happened in the Netherlands with cocoa factories in Zaandam.

The store usually* doesn't demand it, but your ID is tied to your cards via your bank's KYC obligations anyway

* It's becoming more common for sites to ask for ID, I've gotten prompted for it buying a cellphone online, to access an old Facebook account and even Hetzner (Before ever using it) because I got flagged as high risk

yunohn · 8 days ago
Ok, let’s go step by step through your processes, since I am tired of crypto nerds LARPing as Jason Bourne.

How did you first obtain your crypto? What level of anonymity was available for that tx?

Where do you store your crypto short and long term? How do you make it available for spending on online platforms? What percentage of your income and expenditures is in crypto? How do you balance between fiat and crypto anonymously?

What are you buying with the crypto? Why does it need to be purchased with crypto?

Where are you having it shipped? Are you faking all contact details when making the purchase?

Are you completely obscuring yourself physically while collecting said package? Are you obscuring your movements along the way as well to prevent leading back to your home?

Often, proponents love to portray citizens in economically ruinous governments in SAmerica as ideal usecases. Why do they need to use your specific crypto coin? Why can’t they use a locally invented (read: forked) one? It feels much more useful to regulate supply/demand where all said economic activity will take place, instead of replacing your entire net worth from a dying currency to a speculative one mostly propped up by foreigners like you who have zero skin in their local game.

I could go on and on, but it is exhausting to reiterate common sense - no one ever thinks this through fully from the comfort of their air conditioned first world white collar desk job office. How are you ensuring perfect info and op sec in your crypto journey?

> No, the argument is crypto is primarily used for crimes. Which is true.

The argument is right here:

> Outside of buying sex and drugs the only uses for cryptocoins are, and always has been, ransoms, scams and gambling.

It doesn't contain the word "primarily" which indeed makes it false, and the rebuttal to your different claim is this one:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46190260

> Also, if you want privacy, don't use crypto.

Can you tell me another way of buying something over the internet without tying the purchase to a government ID?

yunohn · 8 days ago
Sorry, which web shops demand governmental ID? I have never had to provide them mine in any of the countries I’ve lived in.

If your concern is the webshop finding out your address, well I’m unsure how you solve this when you buy with crypto, but again ship to your home. If you have an alternative place to get it delivered for privacy, might as well do that with fiat transactions the same way.

yunohn commented on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices   theguardian.com/us-news/2... · Posted by u/bookofjoe

Candy bars and soda sure whatever. Look at essentials. The dollar store near me charges $1.99 for 8oz of Tide, the Albertsons a single block further charges $9.99 for 84oz, the dollar store is over double the cost. It's the same story with soap, cleaning products, etc. A tiny container for cheap feels like a deal if you can't do the math, but it's not. Feel free to "test it yourself."

I'm lucky in that I have a real grocery store nearby to compare to. If you live in a food desert where these big chains have driven out all competition you wouldn't have a choice.

yunohn · 9 days ago
Did you know you can save even more buying B2B/wholesale?

Sometimes it is more about the upfront cost and/or resulting storage space needed, than pure price efficiency.

also to keep it like Singapore, let's deport all people illegally (but beat the crap out of them first), execute all drug dealers, execute all drug addicts, and most other criminals - beat the crap out of them and release.

the nice thing about common sense beatings is the cost of prison, housing, food, etc. is all zero, and the whole prison political topic is a non-issue. beatings are in fact extremely efficient, effective, and cheap, which is why lee kwon yew adopted them

I dunno about you, but the USA has never been known for non-violent treatment of immigrants, and if anything, 2025 is not the year to claim such a high ground.

Usually wealth taxes like this only applies to people with (net) assets in excess of a fairly large amount like 50m or 100m, etc.

Skimming the article I couldn’t tell whether that’s the case here.

If not, it seems like it would have pretty bad implications for the average person who isn’t super wealthy but who are trying to build wealth.

yunohn · 15 days ago
Sadly the threshold for wealth tax in the Netherlands has always been abysmally low - even in 2025, the untaxed “wealth” is only 50k.
