I would never, ever want to have anything to do with running any kind of online community these days, or even anything adjacent to one.

it says "up to 14 hours more than intel based mpro", which means intel was designed to last 10 hours which matches what was advertised https://web.archive.org/web/20201109092341/https://www.apple...

we went from 10 hours to 24 hours in 5 years - impressive

i wonder why they advertise gaming on the laptop, anyone plays anything Meaningful on macbooks?

youniverse · 2 months ago
I would guess they are mostly talking to game devs for now, but man in a few years if Apple can get me to throw out my windows rig that me and I imagine many others have around just for gaming I wouldn't hate that!

I like HN, but it's really only important within a very niche subset of the Internet, and it also doesn't have much traffic. There's like a single post submitted every two minutes. That's not much.

I wonder what % of users submit posts and browse new submissions on here and on reddit.

As someone who doesn't use dictation in any form, I'm curious how this compares to the built-in dictation functions of macOS or iOS?

I believe audio is normally processed on device but transcripts can be sent to apple.

Even apps like superwhisper I'm looking to ditch because during an update they swapped my local models to cloud models which is a crazy breach of trust.

Very happy to see this stuff!

One of the things that drives me crazy about YouTube is that if a video gets taken down, it shows up as a "This video is no longer available" with no further metadata. I am far, far more uptight about no knowing which video was removed than I am about the fact that it is no longer available.

I have put serious thought into creating a tool that would automatically yt-dlp every video I open to a giant hard drive and append a simple index with the title, channel, thumbnail and date.

In general, I think people are way too casual about media of all kinds silently disappearing when you're not looking.

youniverse · 3 months ago
Agreed, I can't describe the sadness that some of my most treasured nostalgic videos were lost before I knew about yt-dlp, and I can't find out what their titles even were. For example on spotify when music gets removed, if it's in your playlist it just shows it greyed out and unplayable.

Someone at google please give us the ability to see titles!

Invest in gold mining stocks and/or ETFs (see NUGT).

Actually, you're already a little late on this. Gold is up almost 40% in 2025 but most observers seem to think it still has room to run.

youniverse · 3 months ago
Doesn't gold also go down during a market crash?

Tim ferris recommended these guys https://fromourplace.com as a nonstick stainless steel pan and I've had a great experience with my set!

I am not affiliated just very happy with the product if anyone was looking for stuff to try.

> But the bigger problem for housing affordability, he adds, is that "we just haven't built enough [homes] to keep up with the population growth and household formation."

The circular incentive here is left unsaid. If a house is an investment, you and every other homeowner has an incentive to keep supply low and demand high. This ultimately drives votes, lobbying, and policies that prevent houses being built. Otherwise you end up with falling rents and stagnating property prices, like in Austin.

I would imagine most of the housing being newly built is also on the higher end. This new supply doesn't exactly help affordability!
